So what should the color scheme be then?

Bob- Awesome flights with your vintage Astron Renegade !
As far as a color scheme for the new Renegade, I think it would look great in an "Interceptor"-like scheme with some sort of custom decals from Sandman.

I've built (1) Renegade-D---and as a single stage. I'm not sure, but I thought I heard somewhere that there's an LED light kit available for the Renegade(?)
Hence:

White? White?? It's after Labor Day. You can't wear white. Okay, anyway. Next question regarding build. Estes has the engine mount as a Heavy BT 50 (which the directions call a "BT1000"). Can I use a plain old BT 50? If I do use a plain BT 50, should I use it for the booster or the sustainer?

The centering rings for the heavy duty motor mount will fit loosely around a BT-50.
If you are using your own rings for the second motor mount, you'll be fine. I'd use the BT-50 in the upper stage. You can make it longer and thus use E9 motors as a sustainer. |

Obviously, I didn't do it in white, but I finally finished the Renegade non D this weekend. It was set aside many times and is the main reason for the recent rant against Rustoleum I made.
So without further ado.....

So, It doesn't look like the above pic anymore. Last weekend on father's day I took the boys down to a new field I was told about by some local police officers while launching at a nearby school. It was the best of launches, it was the worst of launches.
The winds were a little strong, but not for the size of the field, maybe about 10-15 mph. In hindsight, definitely too strong for launching the Renegade. I can't find my notes anymore, but I recall she was pretty overweight from what the model is supposed to weigh (again due to and leading to my frustrations with Rustoleum). Anyway, launched her on a C6-0 to A8-5. I had upsized the launch lugs to 3/16" but only used a 1/8" rod due to the rocket binding on the larger rod. The launch was clean and straight up to begin and slow. The rocket began to cock into the wind slightly under power of the booster, but as the power tapered off, the Renegade coocked badly into the wind at about 100', when separation occurred. While the separation was clean and the booster recovery system (a streamer in a tube next to the upper stage motor) deployed okay (no damage to the booster BTW, you can see the booster as a black dot just above the wires about center of the second pic) the sustainer was now pointed slightly downward. The sidewalk along the edge of the parking lot in the picture runs along the edge of a dog walking park. Two fenced in areas, the nearer dog park is about 100' by 150' and grass (no longer used), the farther is 300' by 150' and gravel topped. My heart skipped a beat as I pictured someones Fido impaled, but fortunately, no canine gore was to be had. Rocket gore, that is another thing... TBC

The booster was recovered with nary a scratch on her and all fins and pods still firm and tight. The same could not be said for the sustainer. Following a walk over to the gate and then into the dog park, I was heartened to see only one dog and it was at the closer side of the park. No irate canine owner threatening me. After exchanging greetings with the owners, I inquired if they saw the rocket land. While aware of my launchings that day, they were not aware of this particular one. I looked toward the other end of the area and saw in the distance the orange of those hideous Chinese parachutes Estes had for a while.
My heart began to lift a bit while strolling to the other end of the graveled park. The gravel in this park is what those in paving call "fines", the smallest bits and pieces from the screening process, resembling kitty litter if anything. They were about two to three inches deep and are like walking on a loose sand. I say this because I was thinking this was much better for my rocket to land on than the parking lot to the side. I was to find out differently shortly... TBC
