Yes, I still do balsa.
Sorry, I was thinking of LOC 3" tubing, which is 3.1" O.D. Is doing a glue up of basswood a possibility for a 4" cone?

Yes, it’s more than possible but…the wood is expensive.

The best I can get in balsa is a 2” x 4” x 12” long at $14.00 each so up to 12”.

On longer cones I can start with a 3”x3” for the center and glue up four pieces for the base of the cone and the shoulder.
The seems aren’t too bad to fill.

I hope that makes sense.

So, yes, I can do it but it’s expensive.

Basswood is available in larger sizes but it’s current rate for kiln dried basswood is an unbelievable $14.80 per board feet.

While basswood grows locally it is priced like a tropical hardwood.

Looks like the Semroc Pro Cherokee is selling well.

My main tubing is old mis-sized tubing I bought in the early 90s from Matt Steele at NCR. It is about 2.34” OD. I bought maybe 10 tubes (30” long?) for $1 each. But, no nose cones, couplers, centering rings were available, of course, so I have to make my own.

The upscale size is 2.4 (2.34” tube divided by .976” original BT50 tube.) so the height is going to be 2.4 X the original model total length (31.6”), making it 75.8”.

I remember discussions about Jerry’s upscale Trident. Not faulting Jerry, but I’d call it a “sport upscale”. I am taking great pains (and too much time!) making mine a true upscale, with faithful upscaling on the original’s nose cones. A good example is the upper nose cone on the lower main tube. That was a BNC-50J, an unusual slightly flat-topped nose cone. I turned exact replicas of that 50J profile. Crazy, I know, but it’s just my OCD raising it’s ugly head.

Agreed - Jerry's was sport scale. I did some changes to get closer but not perfect

I was looking at the specs and I assume that it is standard BT80 / T80 2.60x2.558 airframe tubing and not BT80H / T80H 2.64x2.558 heavy wall tubing.
A “Pro” series Semroc kit at this price level should have the heavy wall tubing like the old SLS series kits … same as the SLS Brighton.

I hope this 2.60” diameter is a misprint. Not knocking the Pro Cherokee but for the suggested motors I would prefer the heavy walled tubing for durability.

If anyone that has purchased this kit can confirm that it’s BT80H and not standard BT80 I will certainly buy one from Semroc to build and fly … 🚀

I sent Randy an email and asked if the BT is heavy walled and he said it was.

Thanks for confirming with Randy … as soon as these are restocked I’m getting one!
I noticed the diameter is also updated on the site

Looking forward to this. I have purchased at least two (sometimes three) of every SLS / Pro series kit Semroc has released except for the SLS Brighton and the SLS Laser-X. I am looking forward to this and will support Randy on future Pro releases.

Steve-
Same here !
I have 2 of all the SLS kits except the Brighton and Laser-X.
Had no interest in either of those.
I just can't justify $100 for this one though.

Funny, the SLS Brighton and SLS Laser-X are the only two SLS kits I have. Most were no longer available when I first started ordering from Semroc. I missed out on some great kits.

I got the Brighton (any idea where that name came from? — its an upscaled Estes Ranger) for $39 on eBay years ago. Its last list price was $99, I think. It has a TON of parts — all kinds of interchangeable motor mounts.

The SLS Laser-X I got at a rocket swap meet for $40.
