Default From The Earth To The Moon

Anybody have the HBO series hosted by Tom called From The Earth To The Moon?

He hosts it. I have the DVD set.

At first it is good then he gets off the rails with certain aspects. Hollywood drama, and don't bother watching the Apollo 13 segment. All it is about is the news media.

One thing that helps show the Apollo missions were real:
Watch his CGI for launches and moon walking, then compare to the NASA Archive movie: For All Mankind. Big difference on how they move around on the moon. And in the Command Module.

The CGI launch is pathetic, why did they bother with CGI, couldn't borrow the real deal from NASA or the networks?

For Apollo 11 he does this great big drama thing about who would step out first. Hollywood crap that doesn't make sense. Of course it was determined way before they probably knew who the crew would be. They finally give a solid answer on who it would be.

For a really good WWII movie: Operation Cicero, the subject/individual of this movie should be made a World Wide Hero. You need to watch the credits to see why!

The Lost Battalion is a great WWI movie from A&E.

I read the book by Jim Lovel Lost Moon the Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13. twice a year. Still find stuff I glanced over during the first 20 or so readings. They've re-named it to Apollo 13 now for newer reprints.

Compare that to a couple of academy awards, a couple of Golden Globes, multiple Emmys and one or two dozen absolutely FANTASTIC movies, and I'd say he's done all right. :-)

Dragnet was great!
It was a parody of the old show from the 60s (And 50s).
Heck, one of the actors from the 60s series was in the movie (Harry Morgan).

An important connection for us hobby rocket folks was that the movie was produced by Robert K. Weiss i.e. Bob Weiss who was a member of TRA.

It's not a bad mini-series, but the quality does vary quite a bit from episode to episode. The one about the Apollo 1 Fire was very good, and I thought the one about Apollo 17 was excellent. Overall, not a bad way for people who didn't live through it to get up to speed on what happened. I was reading about the update being made to the Apollo 11 exhibit at the main Smithsonian Air and Space museum - they mentioned that originally it was set up for the people that had lived through it. Today, most of the people that visit the museum were born after the last moon landing and so often don't know most of the back story, so the exhibit is being updated to reflect that.
Yes, there is a lot of artistic license, but sadly that's the way of the film industry these days. The movie 'Apollo 13' was reasonably accurate, but even it had a fair amount of artistic license taken.

I took a one credit tennis class in college. Mostly cute blondes in short skirts, but two of my friends and three other guys were in the class as well. One of my friends had played in high school and had some game, so he and another guy partnered up against the instructors. Rick and I were definite Bachelor Party types, old gym shorts or cutoffs with t-shirts and second hand rackets, and we always got partnered with two country club types Conners & MeEnroe, who dressed the part and had the equipment to match. Very impressed with themselves and the image they projected. Rick and I played them for the final and beat them badly. It was so bad that both of us took Tom Hanks-esque swings during the match. Conners and McEnroe started getting pissy with each other early in the match and at one point one of them said "I can't believe we're getting beat by these two losers!" We didn't mind. It was the best kind of win.
