Yeah, I guess one of the problems with ol’ R2 is he’s so short and squatty the ‘damping moment’ is pathetic: any wobble just is not able to be dampened quickly and a wobble or two can quickly turn into sky writing before it can straighten itself out. Earl

One more reason R2D2 needs the C5-3, C12-4, D16, D21, or D24... The lack of length needs the big kick off the pad due to zilch damping ability.

Any idea how much your's weighs? I just weighed mine. With clear fins attached, no recovery or engine, it weighs 6.0 ounces. The dome by itself weighs 1.9 ounces. I checked the 1980 Estes catalog and it indicates a net weight of 5.1 ounces, but I have no idea if that weight includes the addendum adding the 3rd weight. Although I believe the weights are only 0.12 ounces each. So I'm still about 0.8 to 0.9 over catalog. Maybe I was a little more generous than I thought with the epoxy holding the weights and weight cup in the dome.

Wonder how it would fly WITHOUT the fins and extra noseweight ?

To answer your question, my R2 weighs 5oz ready to fly. That includes the plastic fins and two #4 bolts I added to make sure they stay attached. It's the #2104 kit. The '95 catalog lists it at 5.1oz.

And I just reread the thread and saw you listed your weight before, but thanks for repeating it. I'm surprised at the weight difference between yours and mine, especially since you mention a plywood bulkhead and epoxy repairs in the dome. 20% more is a lot. I used epoxy in the dome to hold the weights and the weight assembly in, but I didn't think I went that crazy with epoxy, but maybe I did.

That is a significant weight difference considering you're at 6oz dry and I'm at 5oz RTF.
I didn't spare the epoxy either during assembly and I used a different scale today when I verified the weight again. The specs correspond between catalogs too, so it's not as if yours is made of thicker plastic just because it's from the 70's. Please post your flight results when you have them. I'm interested to know what effect two more ounces will have on the stability. |

Don't forget to attach the fins! It'll be neat to see how it flies on the new C5-3 - mine flies on a D12-3, but took a fair amount of additional NW.

I have not been able to get any of the new Super C's, but I've flew it twice.
Estes 18mm C6-3 Did exactly what I expected, yeah, I know, but tried it anyway. Definitely not enough thrust and it arced over, ejection was just a few feet above the ground and chute didn't have time to really open, but R2 is a tough droid, no damage. Here is a video of the C6-3 flight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhqsiMZbND8 Quest 18mm D16-4 Today I got a chance to launch it on a D16-4, no modifications to R2 since the C6-3 flight. What a huge difference, straight up and stable. This is the motor for R2, at least mine. Here is a video of the D16-4 flight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1OojhXdB6E
