Yeah, I was a little surprised at that myself, but at the same time, the MAV is heavy but not all that draggy (especially relative to the 1/200 Saturn V), so I would guess the momentum increase overcame the increased drag. As others have noted, and the cert data shows, the delays are a bit over 3s (a bit unusual for Estes motors).
I will be flying more of these motors (I have six more and will be ordering a larger quantity from AC Supply in the next day or two) so will be doing some more flying...and I almost always fly an altimeter aboard a model, regardless of what it is. I MAY compare against older C5-3s, which were certified with 9.1 N-s of total impulse. But I am a little CATO-shy with the ones I have left....

The C5-3 CATO batch numbers were posted here on YORF sometime in the past. Seems like it was only one or two batches. I'm on a 24 hour shift or I'd look at my remaining one and give you the number off of it. IIRC, people didn't have trouble with the other batches. None of my Centuri labeled ones cato'd. I flew a lot more of them than the Estes branded ones.

The old cato-prone C5-3's have a "X" in their date code.
All my old ones either have a "Z" in their date code or were way prior to "X". I only had 3 with the "X" date code. One of them blew up my original Mars Lander built from a 1970 bagged kit. The other two I mounted to sticks and launched them like bottle-rockets on the 4th of July. One flew fine, the other made a good M80 simulation. AC Supply now has the C5-3 in stock. I'm going to order at least 10 packs as they have them for like $7 and a few cents change.

I unknowingly got into a batch of CATO prone C5-3's from an E-Bay buy. Before I figured it out I tried to fly my Grandson's "The Dude" with one. First flight and it went up in ball of flames on the pad. All he could say was wow that was awesome. It was.

Would've been even more awesome if it was filled with H!

Thanks for taking the time to post your experiences on these motors and your B6-4 motor data. Much appreciated! I too am a bit surprised the Saturn did not show a higher altitude on the C5s, but your thoughts on it (drag) may be correct. My primary experiences with the C5 back when they first came out was on my Centuri Orion in the late 70s, but it was the only large rocket I had at the time to fly C5s on. But as stated earlier, they did boost it noticeably higher than C6 motors. If I had a decent sized field, I would love to fly some of those C12s. Earl

The 1/200 Saturn V is a ~200 foot flight on either C6 or C5-3. On a Q-Jet C12-4 it's ~350 and on a Q-Jet D16-4 it's ~425.
The MAV goes a little higher on all of these, and the C5-3 (in the one flight I did) took it about halfway between where a C6-3 and a C12-4 does. I only have five flights total on the model (vs. 20 on the Saturn V) so not enough data yet for real trends.

On the draggy/heavy Estes 1284 Space Shuttle and Mars Lander the C5-3 makes an amazing performance difference compared to the C6-3.
I dont think I ever had a flight with either of those rockets with a C6-3 that did not "arc over" instead of fly straight. With the C5 they always flew straight if I did not exceed wind parameters.

I've yet to fly my Mars Lander or Outlander. They will be at the top of my list when I get some C5's.
