He should come to my house to launch...I'd get lots more practice with my new camera, and he'd have all the pics he wants.

You guys need to come down here! Short-sleeve weather in December is not uncommon, but when winter strikes, it often hits harder than any of us is adjusted to.

(Note, I almost added "We have lots of exposed pipes...", but I could hear the smirks and giggles all the way down here, and so decided against it... )

I'm looking for a camera. I want one, but I'm waiting until after the holiday level of paranoia is gone and the crowds have dispersed back to their usual numbers before venturing back to the local money pits we call our malls. When I find the one I want, I'll start filling these Flight Report messages with enough bandwidth killer to choke Scott's servers six ways from Sunday.

I caught that problem. Yeah, I'll post a warning at the top of the message first.

Craig's happy now...

I went to Best Buy today and looked at the low-priced cameras, and decided to pick up an HP M420 (5 MPx). They had a bunch of them on sale for $99, and I figured I couldn't make too bad a purchase with it. Bought a 2 GB smart card for picture storage, so it came up to my target price of $150.

Here's one of my first shots:

This is my long table with the bulk of my collection sitting on it. Give me a few days to get familiar with it, and I'll start filling up some bandwidth...

Default Flight Report for April 21, 2007

The day began with low winds and comfortable temps. As the day wore on to 3:30 PM and onward, the breeze at BARCLONE field steadily built to steady winds in the 5-10 MPH zone. Not impossible to fly in, but inching toward the uncomfortable when I'm trying to test fly some new birds. Today's flight schedule included four such designs.

Pictures of the second Antares flight attached...

Flight 1: BARCLONE Antares, A8-3. Absolutely the straightest boost I've seen in a model yet, no wiggles discernable. The motor chosen was my regular first-time power, but it really needed extra power to get some decent altitude. This probably reached 100'. The deployment was a bit harried, as the parachute shrouds got tangled around one of the fin pods, and the model "flutter-chuted" down to the ground horizontally. I immediately spotted a crimping in the body tube at the top leading tip of the root, all around the tube. I will need to address this in a future revision of the plan, either with a label "skin" around this area, or an internal reinforcement of some kind.

Flight 2: BARCLONE Antares, B4-4. Much better boost, maybe to 300' this time. Model may have deployed near apogee, though it was hard to see as the model was in the sun at the time and I was attempting to grab some digi-pics at this moment. It's hard to be a one-man-show, prepping, launching, and trying to snap pics all in one smooth motion. Hopefully these shots caught something other than clouds.

Flight 3: BARCLONE Andromeda Prototype #1 (heavy), B4-4. Not a bad flight, not the best flight, but satisfactory for a heavier-than-planned prototype. I noticed a slight wiggle in the ascent, probably due both to strong winds upstairs and the excess weight of the model. No cartwheels, though. The model went upward and arced over still trailing the delay smoke, deploying very low on the downswing side. More power needed for this version.

Flight 4: BARCLONE Andromeda Prototype #1 (heavy), B6-4. Better lift-off, but at a price of a higher Dv which shred 4 of 6 parachute lines. The higher acceleration smoothed out the ascent. No wiggle noticed immediately, but as with the Antares, the model was in the sun relative to my position. Landing held up, even though the model came down a bit harder than with a proper canopy.

Flight 5: BARCLONE Kitfox, 1/2 A3-4T. Completely unstable. Cartwheeled at about 40-50', no velocity. Model sputtered and flip-flopped to the ground, deploying the chute after contact. RockSim missed this one totally, saying that the design was stable with the addition of the ring fin at the rear. Wahwahwahhh...

Flight 6: BARCLONE Swallow, 1/2 A3-4T. Good boost, but the delay was too long. Model was stable and showed no bad habits under power. Deployment was on the downswing, at about 50'. Canopy opened fully before impact, and model descended last 15' fine.

When most folks post a pic of that many rockets they're still in the bag... it's something to see em all built... looks like you've got some painting to do though! That looks like a very satisfying fleet with plenty of options for a launch day.

DW, have you ventured over to the "Shameful and gratuitous..." thread, and looked at the very first post? These are just a few from the collection...

Did I mention that I'm one sick puppy when it comes to rocketry?
