Vintage Estes Star Speeder Build
I started my vintage Estes Star Speeder build, cool looking rocket. The parts are in great shape and the build is per the plans.

Once again because I have so many kit left to build, I have really had to keep to the KISS method of building. I sealed the balsa parts with Brodak sealer, 3 coats for a smooth grain free surface then built as per the plans. Sure there are some imperfections due to the age of the parts but I can live with it. Keeping the build simple I was able to get her sealed and built in the same day while at the same time building the Estes Hi Flier. Hopefully today is warm enough outside and I can begin spraying the rocket with old Krylon White with no primer. Also I found this white Aliphatic glue sometime ago at my local wood shop and decided to give it a try. I refurbish old furniture and I need a glue that dries clear. Titebond original is a great glue but the yellowish color does not make for a clean looking wood joint. Titebond has even said the yellow dye that is added is for marketing only. This glue from ROO is an Aliphatic Resin and you can buy it in white that dries clear or traditional yellow. So far on my furniture this glue is great, acts just like traditional Titebond original. Roo also sells a white Type II wood glue but I have not tried it yet. I used it on these two builds and so works great, really fast grab time just like Titebond.

The late 70s/early 80s artwork is beautiful. I love that period where the sci-fi models were given that style of artwork as Estes transitioned from the skill level style facecards.
Looks great! Last edited by 5x7 : 12-11-2019 at 09:39 AM. |

I built a second vintage Star Speeder about 5 years ago.
Very fun build. I have a Skytracer, F61 Starfighter, and a Starship Nova on the build pile now. Attack Craft Orion and Manta Bomber too. I really like the sci-fi/futuristic types.

I like how they provide two canopies and
the shock cord is printed on card stock - not on the thin 20 lb. paper instructions.

Estes used to print things like fin patterns, tri-fold shock cord mounts, and wrap around fin and launch lug marking guides on card stock back in the 1970s. Sometimes they were on separate cards and sometimes they were printed on the back of the face card. It depended on the kit and sometimes when that kit was made.

Looks good so far! I have one I built years ago - never shot it off yet!

Here she is ready for flight. Once again another KISS build, 3 coats of balsa sealer on the wood followed by Old Krylon Gloss White. The decals were pretty good for their age, another fun build. The HI Flier was painted with Old Krylon orange, probably do white as my first coat next time. Even though I don't use primer I still have to sometimes sand the paint if I see obvious flaws or particles on the model. The good thing about old Krylon is it dries fast for sanding and can be recoated anytime. The only issue I have noticed is yellow, red and orange is not very opaque so I think I will lay down a coat of Old Krylon white next time.

Watch out with the Hi Flier on a C motor.
They are notoriously unstable on Cs if you don't add noseweight.
