I'm with you--I recall when dwarves (who made money from being tossed) protested the laws that prohibit dwarf-tossing, because they *wanted* to engage in it--but the busybodies who feel compelled to protect us from ourselves carried the day... :-( Carbide cannons (which shoot pumpkins) are another bit of farm fun at harvest time, which I'm sure the "park protectors" would have fits over.

I will. I figure it will be a very slow and agonizing process.

I have a small field in mind. It is:
  1. Near town
  2. Not heavily used
  3. Lacks soccer goals
  4. Away from busy streets
  5. Has very good parking
  6. Is mostly sand/dirt in the middle
Now I just need to begin the agonizing process of convincing Public Servants that we are not a bunch of terrorists or pyromaniacs hell-bent on burning down a public park.

If a picture is worth a thousand words then a video is worth a thousand pictures. Here's a great video. Good luck!

Heartily agreed with tmacklin! I can also recommend a photograph of a model rocket lifting off from a rack launcher at the Mall in Washington, D.C., with the Capitol Building looming in the background. The occasion was the annual Mall Demonstration of the NAR, sponsored by the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution (*videos* of NAR Mall demonstrations, from YouTube and/or from the NAR, would be persuasive); this photograph is the very first illustration (Figure 1-1, on page 2) in the Sixth (1994) Edition of G. Harry Stine's "Handbook of Model Rocketry" (you'll soon have two copies of it--watch your mailbox!). Also:

Other fine photographs of public demonstration launches are in "Basics of Model Rocketry" by Douglas Pratt, "Second Stage: Advanced Model Rocketry" (Edited by Michael Banks), and "Model Rocketry: Hobby of Tomorrow," by Peter Lowry and Field Griffith, all of which you will also soon have.

Do a search on YouTube for the "introduction to Rocketry" video with William Shatner... That should get their attention! He spells it out so ANY sixth grader can understand... (so hopefully politicians can get it too).

Hey, if the SHAT is for it, who can be agin' it??

Later! OL JR

You're welcome. I do live by G. Harry Stine's maxim of "Pay it *forward*!" I'd forgotten about "Model Rocketry: The Last Frontier" (the film narrated by William Shatner, who appears in it several times)--kudos to Luke Strawwalker and Tmacklin! Here are a few additional links to it (see: https://www.google.com/search?hl=en...0.0.vttjSpNByyU ).

A big Ray Charles "UH-HUNH" to that! Kids and adults having fun prepping and flying model rockets...*safely*.

That's the one, but even though the Shat's mellow tones throughout, I would hold off with that till a bit later. I may be wrong in my thinking on this. But that goes into too much detail and is too lengthy at 15 minutes.

You want to keep it to under 2 minutes at a time, till you have them a little bit more hooked.
