Default 50th Anniversary of GPS

Labor Day weekend of 1973 was the birth of the United States Global Positioning System (GPS). It was an idea that came out of the Pentagon. Scott Manley has posted a video where he goes into some pretty good detail into the history of GPS and how it all works. It is one of his longer videos at over 27 minutes.

I don't have a GPS (unless you count my phone), but I've been on several rides where the "leader" (the guy with a GPS, usually a rich dude on a BMW that knows everything) would lead us through nice back roads and vistas...which turned into gravel...which turned into dirt...which turned into a dead end. Not the best riding for street bikes. They always claimed GPS said it was a paved road all the way through.

PULLLLEEEEZZZE !

The only use I have for paper maps is rolling them up for a firestarter.
Buggy-Whip factories don't exist anymore either because they are OBSOLETE.
Nobody uses a UNIVAC anymore either.

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.

I do too when I'm riding my own ride. I have a clear panel on my tank bag where I place a printout of the area I plan to ride. I've used my phone before, but I don't much care for that because the glare from the sun makes it hard to see at times.

The other problem with using a phone's GPS on a ride is that it can overheat in direct sunlight on a hot day and cause the phone to shut down until it cools down to it operating temperature range.

Yes, especially if it is in a clear pouch on the tank bag. Miniature greenhouse.
