Default Estes Maxi HoJo question.

After I finish the Boeing ALCM I'm going to build an Estes Maxi Honest John #1269. The shoulder of the nose cone is only .75" and it inserts into a BT80. Is there any reason I shouldn't increase the length of the shoulder with a piece of BT80 coupler?

Thanks!

Good idea but be warned.

Bt-80 coupler is notoriously tight.

I mean so tight if you try it, you may not get it out without damage.

Buy your coupler from Semroc or BMS.

I have a Semroc coupler already. Thanks! What I'll probably do is soak it with thin CA and then sand it for a good fit with the BT80. I'll probaby use 2" of it--half of the coupler's length.

Jeffyjeep: I built the original Maxi-Brute HJ back in the '70s and used the nose cone as is. Flew it on FSI E60s and F100s, as well as the AVI E11.8. Never had an issue with the nose cone coming off under boost. Tape seemed to work okay. Until the fatefull day a motor under development did not eject...
Still, as I am building the reissue kit, I may consider also extending the shoulder.

Chas

I'll second that.

I'm on a job in Nashville now, but I checked the fit of the coupler before I left. The coupler has a beautiful slip-fit with the BT80. It may even be loose enough to need tape.

I cut the coupler to 2" long and registered it to the shoulder of the NC. To align them perfectly for gluing, I cut a scrap piece of BT80 to 2.5", inserted both the NC and coupler into it, and epoxied them together from the inside. When the resin hardened I simply slit and removed the piece of 2.5" BT80.

Same here. However, the short shoulder amplifies the potential for wallowing out the body tube when handling the rocket or even displaying it at an angle without directly supporting the nose cone.

The job is finished. I'll probably be leaving in the morning.

Maybe another time!
