Thanks Steve! I'll be cutting some new (appropriate thickness) fins! EDIT: I found and measured the Semroc kit fins - they were 3/16" thick! I had a feeling they were too thick! EDIT: Strange - If you look up the kit fins on the Semroc website, they are listed as 3/16" thick: http://www.erockets.biz/semroc-lase...balsa-sem-fv-2/

Are those 3/32 fins from the Quest commemorative kit, or the quest bagged release? |

Actually, they are from the original MMI kit. I think it's just hysterical that I'd never really noticed that the balsa sheet was printed with the Testor's info. And who knew that Testor's sold 36" sheets of balsa at one time. I wonder if Harry just went down to a local hobby store to buy it. Peter and I were both really surprised the MMI kit had die-cut fins. Clearly not a cheap thing to do. Also, the boxes and box art are just really well done. Insert in the boxes were also die cut to accomodate all the parts. Just a really impressive amount of effort and expense went in to those first kits. |

And who knew that a 36" sheet could be purchased for only $0.25? My, times have changed. Steve (and Peter): Thanks for sharing; just a great walkthrough. Almost like being there.

That is interesting, because the Aerobee-Hi kit (Semroc KV-2) that I built had 3/32" thick fins, but that kit was obtained before Carl died. I know that thicker fins are used in the bigger Aerobee 150 and Aerobee 300 kits.

I can remember only paying about 50¢ for sheets of balsa that size in the late 70's to mid 80's.
Balsa now has gotten WAY outta hand price wise. A 24"x8" sheet of 1/64" plywood is now an insane over $20, which renders it cost prohibitive to sheet R/C foam wing cores.

The Aerobee 150 and 300 Semroc kits are larger scale than that original Aerobee.
Makes sense for scale purposes thay are thicker.
