Craig, here is a design that is especially for you called Soren's Rocket. I know that it is from one of the Star Trek movies but I cannot remember what one . It uses an 13mm motor mount and also uses a Clear Plastic tube as a center body tube so view this design with the Opacity on. I have a photo of it but it is too large to post as a thumbnail .

New Plan -- Kitfox
This one takes me back to the origin of this thread, which was a "scrounged-up" design based on parts that I had left over from other projects. I was looking in my parts box this morning and came upon a nose cone and a 10" length of ST-8 from what I figure was meant to be another Aerobee 150, but which I never started on. I also wanted another Schoolyard Sounder design, so finding some CR-58 rings and a length of ST-5 took care of an engine mount. Having just completed the fins for a replacement Tradewind, I chose to recycle the main fin shape and use two of them with a ring-fin from a length of BT-55. RockSim says the design is stable with a 2.15 margin using the A10-3T.
Length: 15.30" Diameter: 0.908" (ST-8) Fin Span: 4.91" Weight: 0.88 oz 1/2A3-2T......115'......Dv 8 FPS A10-3T........240'......Dv 12 FPS Both motors reach flight velocity on a standard rod. Enjoy!

Craig, those are two great designs you have there with the Quill and the Kitfox. I see you have noticed that the rintail fins are great for correcting an unstable design, however I still cannot seem to get Rocksim to print the pylon fin pattern for the ringtail fins . Have you had any luck with that?

Truthfully, I haven't really noticed it. This one uses a different pylon shape that I hacked from a simple fin, so it wasn't an issue. I'll try some samples and see what I get. Sometimes the ringtail works well, but more often they really pull the performance down by about half. There must be a lot of drag being figured into the ring...

New Plan -- Flitter
Another in the Schoolyard Sounders series. The model has reasonably good performance of 460' altitude and a Dv of 10-11 FPS. Only one motor is called out -- the A3-4T; all others produce very high Dv numbers. The model has a 1.75 stability margin with this motor in place.
Included below is the suggested fin cutting pattern. Some may ask "Why do I use so many pieces to create such a small fin?" The answer has to do with the grain direction around the outer edges. You want the grain parallel to the outer edges as much as possible. This is not as critical with a traditional solid-slab fin because the bulk of the fin adds to the strength; with an open-frame fin, you don't have the extra bulk to resist warpage and breakage. Running small strips of balsa around the edges, parallel to that edge, adds tremendous rigidity with little to no penalty in weight. Think more in terms of building a Guillows or Comet rubber-band model airplane than in building a rocket fin. Same principle. One suggestion: The fins are called out as 1/16" balsa sheet, but start your construction with 3/32" sheet and sand the surfaces down to an average thickness. Finish by laminating paper labels to both sides of each fin, sealed with thin CA. Length: 15.49" Diameter: 0.908" (ST-8) Fin Span: 4.85" Weight: 0.82 oz Enjoy!

Here is a vintage spaceship design called the Terra X. I have seen it a few places on the web but and believe its from some vintage sci-fi show or movie? I had to put a ringtail fin on the rear of this design to keep this short-fat design stable. It also seems to be a design challenge when a design has long fins forward of the CG as this design has.
