This is NOT directed at Bill ...

Even so, I don't understand the mind sets of those that think things made in past decades can't be made today and for less money. Whether it's a paper wrap or a real full stack Saturn V there is no reason it can't be done today. Has to be more expensive to do the injection junk than paper.

It really depends on what you are trying to reproduce. A portable AM/FM radio receiver is much cheaper today due to single-chip solutions compared to a 3x5 circuit board crammed full with discrete components.

Injection-molded plastic parts require a large up-front investment to make the mold, assuming of course you already have access to the molding machine. Once put into production, parts can be cranked out dirt cheap in huge quantities. The tradeoff is whether you can sell enough of them to spread out the high initial investment. Vacuform I cannot speak about, but given how much the technology is used for throw-away packaging materials, must be similar.

Paper wraps, on the other hand, require quite a bit of baby sitting as they are being made, so the cost per set is higher than plastic when operator time is considered. And you still have the initial cost of making the necessary dies and presses.

I cannot help but wonder whether Carl might have succeeded had he made the Saturn V interstage wrap in several pieces instead of trying to be faithful to the original.

Still, the economics depends heavily on whether you can sell enough of the result to amortize the initial investment.

3-D printing may provide an answer, but I am still waiting for the price of the "ink" to come down.

Even at the risk of being crucified for this act, I've painted the RCS units IAW the kit's instructions instead of as how they SHOULD appear. TBC

I will not be flying this SV. If I want one to fly, I'll build a #2157. If I flew and wrecked THIS #2001 that took (2) kits to build I'd kill myself--if the "Vixen" didn't beat me to it.

Or perforated tape! There's still a few machine tools out there that use "perf" tape for their programming!

So I guess you did not get it too badly for putting the V-2 up?

Now to mount the RCS units.

First I darken the yellow marks of Sandman's wrap with a panel line pen to better see them. I then use a needle sander to scrape the finish down to the raw kraft paper. Using regular plastic model cement I surface mount the units. Nothing fancy! TBC

The last thing to paint (yay!)

Using a 00 marten hair artist's brush for the edge and a 1/4" camel hair for the fill in, I've handpainted the fins and the silver portions of the skirts. TBC
