Tomorrow at noon, August 9, will mark 50 years since President Nixon resigned from office. Strange that, in a presidential election year, I have not yet seen a single reference to this 50th anniversary year of what was a very momentous event in American history. This very night 50 years ago, Nixon addressed the nation, stating he would resign the next day at noon.

That August 9th in 1974, my older sister and I were on our way back from a week at camp in the North Georgia mountains, being dropped off in Ellijay, GA (also in North Georgia) at my Mom's parents house. As we came in the front door of the house right at noon with our camp duffel bags, Nixon was walking across the White House lawn, heading for the Presidential helicopter. Really hard to believe that has been 50 years ago tomorrow.

That day 50 years ago was my 12th birthday. Funny how one jumps from 12 to 62 in seemingly such short order.

And the older we get, it seems, the faster time goes by!

Used to be, memories of mine that were 30-40 years ago were at the very edge of my youngest years. Now, in my early 60s, I can very, very easily (thankfully!) recall memories from 50-55 years ago almost like they were yesterday. So, instead of fuzzy memories of these now-distant events, they just don?t seem as old as they, well, really are. So, it makes the passage of time even more difficult to really believe.

In about two weeks I?ll be 40 years out of college. That almost seems like yesterday.
