Capt. John Young Hangar
Johnson Space Center renamed Hangar 276 at Ellington Field in Houston after John Young yesterday.
He was in NASA over 40 years, flew to the moon twice, walked on the moon, and is the only astronaut to fly in four different types of spacecraft. (Gemini, Apollo CM, Apollo LM, and Space Shuttle) Oh, and he snuck a corned beef "sammich" onboard a Gemini flight.

In my book the best overall astronaut NASA has ever had. But then again he was a Georgia Tech grad!
That second class of astronauts he was in (selected 1962) was probably overall best class of astronauts NASA ever selected also. Earl

At public events, he seemed a bit introverted - a cool character, soft-spoken and quiet. But, when he did talk, he would inject dry humor. He would say something so deadpan and casually that you wouldn't realize how funny it was until a few seconds later. I wish I could recall a specific quote to share.
I do recall him telling a funny story, it is probably in his book, about a woman complaining to him about the road named for him, John Young Parkway in Orlando, as if he were responsible for the design and maintenance of the road. He had a long career with NASA. I highly recommend his autobiography. I was especially impressed by his work in the safety program for the Space Shuttle. We usually think about safety criteria and procedures as limiting things ... preventing or delaying launches for example. But, he explains how making the shuttle safer allowed it to fly more. For example, adding GPS navigation, something he fought for, allowed them to specify more emergency landing sites which made weather conditions at specific sites less of an issue for launches. |

If they ever made a movie about him, who should play him? A younger Tommy Lee Jones comes to mind.

I can remember when they launched the first space shuttle mission (STS-1 with Young and Crippen). You know, they have all those monitors attached to them. Young's heart rate, being a veteran space traveler, was said to have barely increased at launch where Crippen's raced. I imagine by the time Crippen made his fourth space flight, the heart rate probably barely increased.
