Although I’ve had good luck with E9 engines, my E9 rocket is now a Dollar Store Treat Bowl. Cheap!

I'm sure you've seen this, Lee, but I'll post it here for those who don't Facebox. This wasn't an E9 CATO, but it was the strangest D12 flight I've ever seen. This is, was, my TLP Perseus. A very light build that should have screamed on a D12. It was announced and counted down twice, but despite what looked to be a perfect hookup, it remained on the pad. The LCO moved onto the next bird, a complicated clustered scratch build. It left the pad with only partial ignition, crossed the creek, and recovered as it was heading down. As it was drifting to the soybeans, the Perseus suddenly ignited. It was already arcing over by the time we turned around, and as the stunned flight line watched, it crossed the creek and plowed into the soybean field under power. Right about then the tracking smoke started flowing, then the ejection charge added the final punctuation to the debacle. Debate immediately started concerning the cause of the unintended flight, but post-mortem gave us no real clues. Everything looked normal. Looks like I can graft a new section on behind the forward fins, so it might actually fly again. Hopefully better than this time.

Wow. I've never had a BP motor do that. It almost sounds like the LCO selected the wrong pad, or some leads got mixed up, and it fired when he switched to the correct one.

It's a wireless system. It left a good 30 seconds after the previous flight left the pad. The silenced was deafening. I don't think anyone was 100% sure of what they were seeing. I know it took me a moment.

Bill,
I just now saw your final comments on what happened. Does make one wonder if it was a combination of some pad error/malfunction and motor malfunction. Hope you can rebuild. I’ve only built one TLP, the Hellfire. Flew great on maiden flight of D12. Second flight was an older E15. No ejection, came in ballistic. It had the paper cap solidly in place, but it sure performed like it had zero BP in the ejection well. As is often the case, those long, complicated builds are the ones that give us the most headaches.

Sad thing is that the same thing happened the next time we launched. "Pad test" was the explanation. All I know is that while everyone was watching the testers, my ESAM-58 took off. Recovery was fairly close and nominal, but I would have liked a chance at a launch pic.
