Did they change the assembly instructions such that you don't paint the individual sections prior to final assembly? Or did you just decide to assemble then paint?.

I rather liked painting the individual sections prior to final assembly - much easier to work with (even without the alternating black/white fuel tubes)

The instructions don’t say anything about prepainting. The only prepainting I plan to do on this model is to prepaint (or wrap) the SM and to prepaint the CM/LES. Even on 1/70 scale 1B’s that had alternating black and white fuel tubes I didn’t prepaint because “The Vixen” has the skills to hand paint after assembly the fuel tubes that need to be black. I don’t know how she does it. Sometimes I think she weighs the same as a duck.

Three weeks ago I was given three rockets.

Estes Saturn 1B.

Estes Mars Snooper.

Estes Orbital Transport.

The MS and OT both had unused Estes motors dated 7-31-69 and 12-4-70.
So it's a good guess that the three models were built in 1960's.
The 1B needs some work but it will fly in the springtime.
Years ago I collected enough parts to clone a Saturn 1B rocket.
I don't know if I still have the parts and if I do, they are stored away somewhere.
I have a complete set of balsa fins from my Kosroc Saturn 1B which I did not use in my build of that kit.
I chose the built up fins from JimZ plans.
Alas, the Kosroc 1B was destroyed two moves ago.

One question?

Were those motors made buy "Mabel"?

JJ,

Tonight, I was looking at your decals of the 1B.
My Saturn 1B has "AS 207" at the bottom of the fuel tubes.
Your decals show "SA 206".

Which is correct?
The "AS" or "SA".
My guess of the initial's are "A" for Apollo and "S" for Saturn?
IDK?

OBTW,

I almost hit the buy now button for the S1B with free shipping from Estes.
Almost.
I want a 1/70 version but not willing to pay over two hundred dollars for it!
Does any body know of
I can buy the BT's for it to clone?

I’ve always thought that “SA” was correct. I’ll check ROTW and other archives when I return home————-tomorrow!!

AS is the mission number.
SA is the serial number of the booster.

AS 207 was Skylab 3
SA 206 was Skylab 2

My 1B is now ready for primer!

I did a modification to the upper section recovery system harness attachment point: rather than bending the supplied piece of music wire and cutting a slit into the SM to push it through, I took a fly line leader eye from my tackle box, bored a hole into the top rim of the LEM shoud inserted the leader eye into the hole and then epoxied it from the inside of the LEM shroud by cutting the top off of the plastic LEM shroud to provide access.

Jeff-

Good idea on the eyelet attachment. In past Saturn 1bs (the original Centuri and the 1991 Estes re-issue) the paper LEM shroud was in no way stout enough to do that type mount. However, with the plastic shroud now, that should work just fine.

BTW, what type plastic glue did you use on your fins-to-tank shroud attachment? That lower wrap looks to be styrene (as do all the wraps), but that tank shroud and fins themselves appear to possibly be ABS plastic, like on the 1/45 Little Joe II. But, the instructions show using tube-type plastic glue on the fins which would be more in keeping with the fins and shroud being styrene.

What'd you think?

Earl

I plan to use Tenax7R/Plastruct Bondene/MicroMark SameStuff to weld my fins.
Those will weld most any plastics and FAST.
Testors Tube Cement SUCKS.
One is much better off using Plain Sig Dope Thinner.
