Blue Thunder motors that I have flown (D21 up to G80) are not loud either....I have often wondered about the name. White Lightning is MUCH louder.

I watched Neal Miller launch a large-scale V-2 model once or twice at Tamiami Park, using an Aerotech White Lightning motor (or motors). In addition to producing a scale-realistic--for a V-2 model--long white flame (the full-scale ones also had long exhaust flames, because of excess alcohol-water escaping from the holes drilled in their nozzle throats for film cooling), the White Lightning propellant burned with a surprisingly loud--but also scale-realistic--roar!

Nope. You listen to a K1100 RMS motor ignite. BOOM! Gone.

The Blue Thunder propellant was developed at the time AeroTech was getting ready to enter the mass-market with a full product line. While the White Lightning propellant and name had been developed and marketed a few years earlier with the E15/F25/G40 (Among others) motors, the high-thrust motors being incorporated into the mass-market release (E30/F50/G80) lacked much of a visual display. While trying to come up with another color flame/smoke effect for the high-thrust motors it was bought up that the propellant used for the long-burn E6 motors emitted a very faint blue flame. From this basis an R&D project was launched to develop a more 'blue' exhaust flame propellant. After some experimentation a propellant with a more visible blue flame was developed which was named "Blue Thunder" (You will have to ask Gary Rosenfield how the name came about). The blue flame is pretty much invisible in the smallest motors but can be seen in 'G' and larger motors. Interesting thing about the BT propellant is that it requires additional pre-production steps before it can be cast.

J800 is fairly similar, especially from about four feet away (malfunctioned pad relay at an adjacent pad at an LDRS one year). Earl
