Thanks Astronwolf. I figured Kline was the designer.
What a cool rocket. I have a couple of ACE cones laying around, but would like to mention that the Aerotech 4” cone is quite close dimensionally. I have a lot of pics in mags of the Mongrel. Can post more, but I think that we now have provenance on this model. |

It is a cool rocket. That there was a lot of variability in nose cone length and shape makes it possible to use any 4" nose cone in the 4:1 to 5:1 range on a clone. It would still be a Mongrel. Such a mutt. The other feature is the 5x 29mm motor mount. I spoke with the RSO of LDRS-1 this weekend, Ken Hubal, and he told me that he flew his with 3x F100s like Chris did. It was a popular combo. Chris has received several requests for plans and fin patterns from people who are going to go with 38 and 54mm mounts instead.

What was the nose cone variation due to? Were they sourcing from different places before Korey started making his classic long 4" nose cone?
I love the old ACE cones because of their long profile. Some people didn't like them because they could flex and crack or flake off paint. I always prepped to get good paint adhesion and never had an issue. Others filled them with foam to prevent it.

The variation came from Korey making these by hand on a lathe in his garage. No CNC, no template. The Ace 4" cone will be my choice for a clone.

I had to go back to the original post to see if he made them from balsa or hardwood. When I read it the other day, I had it in my head he just made a balsa cone and glassed it to use as a template for the ACE cone. I see now that he hand turned cones for kits, at least for a while.

I just can't get on-board with a rocket named "Mongrel" (or MUTT for that matter).
PUREBRED or Thoroughbred, yes, but Mongrel, NO ! Sounds CHEAP.

Ok, ok, Earl.
I can get on board with "Gladiator Combat" rocketry.
