5/5 is also the date my dog died so its kind of a bummer day for me..

So without going too far down this rabbit hole, Cinco de Mayo is not really a holiday Mexico celebrates. The day recalls a victory of a small, poorly equipped Mexican Army against the French. Beating the French is . . . well . . . note that so did the Hugonauts. In any event, a short time later, the French beat them back and occupied Mexico City.

It's really become a day to celebrate Mexican culture. I get that; food's good, beer's good. I myself do that every Tuesday, Taco Tuesday. It's simpler and no history or explanation needed.
