Here is the 3D-printed tail section and a pair of launch shoes.

Nobody has a color photo, eh?

Not helpful, GH. I'm hoping for a color photo which shows the actual vehicle's fin brackets. If I wanted crap, I'd use the plain old tube and the Estes decals.

Whom did you purchase the 3D Doorknob parts from?
Are they still available?

I'm assuming the brackets should be silver as depicted by the Estes decals, but wanted to confirm if possible.

I'll upload a photo of the printed parts later! Pretty cool if you want to "build a better Doorknob!"

After burning many electrons searching the internet I haven’t found any good color pictures of the Doorknob in either single nor two stage configuration - Peter’s drawings (they’re in the 99 Sep/Oct issue of Sport Rocketry if you have access to the NAR website and don’t have a copy of RotW) are the best thing I’ve found indicating the color scheme. Considering the Doorknob’s mission those brackets were probably unpainted steel or aluminum.

Chris, the 3D Doorknob parts are from Galactic Manufacturing, run by Mike and Nick Nowak. I purchased the launch shoes and fin supports for my kit. They also sell laser cut parts.

Chas beat me to it. If for some odd reason you prefer the Ebay route, their Ebay user id is "onlythebeststuff."

I wonder if they painted the fins after they were attached... In the excellent photo Chris posted, you can't see any hint of the brackets against the black fin. That has to be either because the brackets are so small they are almost invisible regardless of color (yet they are VERY visible on the white fin), or they bolted the fin on then sprayed it black.

I think the Estes decals replicating the brackets look gaudy, which is why I asked the question. If I go silver, I'm thinking a very pale aluminum or steel color would be best.

Sounding rockets could be a bit rough and improvised so I wouldn’t be surprised if they painted the black fin on the spot. The people who worked this project would probably be amused at our focus on the rocket rather than what they were measuring - the results of nuclear bomb tests

These parts look great, especially the printed fin can. I’ll do like you guys and buy the launch shoes and fin supports for mine too.
