Default Great article regarding altimeters...

Hi all,

In the latest NAR Member Guidebook there is an article by Bernard Cawley (BEC).

Well written, comprehensive, and now I have an excuse to fly a payload

Bob.

I can second that...Bernard pointed me to the article several months back when I commented here that I really did not know much about the altimeters on the market. Good info and well written.

Thank you, gentlemen.

I hoped that it would provide "an excuse to fly a payload" and give enough info so that readers could choose a suitable bit of electronics.

Enjoy!

...no, thank YOU!

I just renewed my NAR memembership for the 43rd year, so I should be getting a fresh hard copy of the Membership Guide with said article!

Bernard,

Would it be possible for you to post a copy of your article here?

I've got a couple tiny altimeters along with my vintage Adept duel deployment altimeters. However, after watching Eggtimer Rocketry's presentation, I'm tempted to buy a kit and see if my soldering skills have improved enough to build one.

Steve,

I don’t know. Now that you mention it, I don’t know whether I own the IP or the NAR does....but the Member Guidebook is available online on the NAR site (in the members only area). Assuming you’re logged into your NAR account, this should get you to it: https://www.e-digitaleditions.com/i...book-2020/0?m4=

Since it is you who asked. I did NOT cover the Adrel BMP in this article....I started to and there was so much that was different about them that I opted to take it out, figuring that the target audience for the article was people new to altimeters, not seasoned competitors such as yourself.

That said, I was out flying an Adrel today doing some of my virtual NARAM flights....

It was fun to see Cris Erving (and others) at the Manufacturers’ Forum this evening, yes.

My piece in the Member Guidebook isn’t about anything that does deployments, however. Ted Cochran does have an article about getting started with dual deployment in this edition of the Guidebook, but it doesn’t have any specific info on deployment controllers/altimeters by name/brand.

It feels weird to say "vintage" altimeter, but those old Adept models that were designed for flashbulbs really are vintage when it comes to commercially available hobby altimeters. I feel even older now.
