Quest MLAS: Finished & Ready to Fly
I have completed my Quest MLAS model that I started a few weeks ago.
It turned out pretty nice. I was concerned about working with the foam capsule but it turned out just fine. The weight of my MLAS (Without motor or wadding) was 3.5 ozs. I built it stock with no modifications. I will be flying it tomorrow at the San Diego NAR Section's (DART) launch at Fiesta Island. I'll take my camera so I can post pictures of the flight. Bob |

Well done, Bob! Looks very fine indeed. Happy flights, and lets hope the MLAS decides not to re-kit itself! Looking forward to the flight report.

Very nice Bob ..... looks great! How do the instructions suggest finishing the foam nose cone and how did you get yours so smooth? .

Thanks, Steve. The kit instructions recommend using Elmer's Carpenters Wood Filler (Thinned 50% with water) to seal the foam nose cone. I used two coats and sanded both. The only painting recommendation is to use 'Foam Safe' or acrylic paints. I had visions of having to brush paint the foam nose cone but I found a Krylon acrylic, foam safe SPRAY paint called 'Krylon H2O Latex'. I bought a can of gray (I couldn't find the primer version of the paint so I decided to just use a gray undercoat) and a can of white. The H2O paint is very thin and will run if you are not careful. It does dry quickly so you can recoat several time in one day (temperature permitting). It took me five coats to get a solid white finish on the foam capsule. I used Tamiya acrylic brush paint for the 'black' details on the capsule and fins. Then I applied the nice, water-soluble, decals. After the decals dried, the whole model was coated with FUTURE floor polish. I hope that answers your questions. Bob |

Tell me about it. It's not like it hasn't rained in San Diego at all this year. Why, I think the last rainfall San Diego had was back in March or April... Bob |

Bob,
Really nice looking model and thanks for the how-to. I haven't started mine yet but I was worried about finishing the capsule. I think I've seen the Krylon H20 Latex at Walmart. Steve |
