I worked on the fins, scaling from the drawings in the NARTS pack, and a set of drawings I got from Scott Lowther's APR site .

I modeled w/ the sheet metal methods in SolidWorks so I can develop flat patterns for paper fins (like the Estes/Semroc 1/70). Had to fool with the dimensions to end up with the folded fin having the dimensions on the drawings. I also compared to George Gassaway's Saturn 1B drawing--I am pretty close, I think.

SolidWorks also created the fuel tank shroud, so I am posting the patterns.

Now, if I just get those .7 tubes! Can anybody confirm if the email address at the Totally Tubular link is any good for Jim?

Edit: I had to correct the fuel tank shroud, and it is in this post

woo hoo!

I used the fax # on the pricesheet listed at http://www.wooshrocketry.org/misc/tt.htm
and finally made contact with Jim. He has a new email address and said I could post it here

new Totally Tubular email

jimfackert AT gmail DOT com

He responded quickly to my order once I used the fax that old email is dead, I guess. And it looks like he is charging the same prices (except for the postage of course!)

my tubes are on their way!

Thanks for that info. Even though I no longer handle the WOOSH website, I still have access to it. I'll see if I can get in to edit the email address on his catalog.

Isn't that catalog like a 2003 version or something? I remember asking him around 2005 if he'd update it since he does have a number of new different size tubing not listed on that sheet. He said he could, but then it would reflect new higher pricing. I told him to leave it. It's nice to hear he still honors the old pricing.

I've updated the online catalog on the WOOSH site to show the correct email address now.

I just discovered tonight that I used the wrong diameter for the center tube in my CAD model, so the fuel tubes were not on the correct center radius (they are supposed to be .935 -- I had them at .955). Therefore, the shroud wrap in this post was wrong. Here is the corrected file. I deleted the incorrect one above.

Here's a trivia question (perhaps this is widely known):

Where did the Saturn 1 tank cluster come from?

Correct! I ran across that fact a while back and gives a sense of scale when you compare the Mercury Redstone to the Saturn 1 series. According to Peter Alway the Redstone tanks were lengthened.

BTW, Wedge Oldham announced today that he is planning to build a full size Mercury Redstone "...with an intended launch date of sometime in 2011, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Alan B. Shepard's flight."
