Composite Dynamics Longstar clone
A few years ago, Sean (SEL) gave me some parts and templates for a Composite Dynamics Longstar.
I finally got around to building it! The notes don't mention how many fins, so I went with four. The template supplied noted 3/32" basswood, but I used 1/8". I happened to have some nice basswood slats, with rounded edges, which I'd purchased form American Science and Surplus years and years go. The cone is the most interesting part of the kit. CDI used an epoxy resin for the cone. It is attached to a thick cardboard shoulder. I don't recall how the cone was attached to the shock cord, so I epoxied a split centering inside the base, with a notch for a piece of kevlar cord. I had a CDI kit at one point, but totally forgot the internal details. I used an Estes shock cord mount, about a foot of kevlar cord, and a yard or so of 1/4" elastic. I'll use either a small parachute or a streamer. I recessed the engine block so it could accept an Estes E, but TBH I'll probably build an adaptor for a 18mm motor, and fly it on B and C motors. Maybe a Quest 18mm D; that could be fun. I just put a first coat of Kilz primer on it.
