You mean that the fact that they have different lengths and shapes isn't part of the design?

Default FSI Parts List Links

Okay. I kinda agreed to help with getting the plans portion of this site linked to part paks that are available at the SEMROC website. Well, since it started on this thread, I thought it would only be appropriate to start with the FSI plans. With that said, here is a list of the FSI kits with links to the SEMROC site for parts. From left to right: A original Sprint that I bought back in '89 or '90 after I lost my first Sprint - don't remember the circumstances. I'm thinking of metallic silver for the final coat of paint with black trim.
Next are NOVA and Voyager clones built with SEMROC parts, both were built last summer.
The Excalibur and Megatron are both originals, and have been sitting in the closet for 9 or 10 years. The Megatron is the only one that I've flown: several very nice flights on D20/D18 combinations back when I was in Massachusetts.

Sean,

Nice group of FSI rockets there bud. I like your Megatron. I always thought of it as the FSI Omega Your Megatron reminds me that I acutally purchased one of those back in the early 90's just before FSI went out of business. I built it but never got around to painting it and now I no longer have it. I may have given it to a friend but I can't remember.

Hey, I can't help it ..... these guys got me all cranked up. I was minding my own business when along comes this FSI thread

I hope to iron out the rest of the details on the SLS OSO this weekend. I still have a couple of things to work out with the fin pattern and such. I'll post some parts, images ect. soon.

My thoughts exactly on the Megatron - an Omega, but a bit quicker to build with only 6 fins.
Can't really tell by the photo, but I used copper leaf on the nose cone. It's somewhat mottled looking at this point, but I like the way it turned out. I really should finish painting that one.
Speaking of painting, the good news is I just put the metallic silver coat on the Sprint. The bad news is that genius here got so wrapped up in masking the fins, he forgot to mask off the transition Hope I still have a can of red spray paint in the garage...

I restarted a long-delayed project this morning: Recreating (most) of the old-timey FSI models using 1" heavy-duty tubes. (The foil-lined ones from BMS.)

I actually made the first of these, a Viking II, many years ago. I've flown it with C11-7 and D12-7 motors . . . maybe a E9-8, but I'm not sure. Picture attached.

I bought the tubes and had BMS make the cones (balsa) several years back. I treated the cones with Minwax wood hardener, figured out the dimensions of the slightly upscaled parts (1:1.09 or so), and then forgot about the project for a few summers.

This morning I cut tubes and tube-fins for:

Micro

Penetrator

Viking I

Viking II (another copy!)

Viking III

I'm going to use 1/8" basswood for the fins.

I might drill holes in the cone bases to pour lead shot and epoxy in. The cones are really lightweight compared to the hardwood originals.

Red face Basswood vs. Balsa, 3 to 1!

*Nice!*

If the original fins were balsa, some additional nose weight would help out, too.

Me and Bill E., we know basswood weighs 3 times what balsa does!

(Bill cloned an Estes Wolverine and a Centuri Scram-Jet, see...)

Stefan,

I like the way you used the foil lined tubes for the exterior tubes. That's a really unique look and the finished model really looks great.

Some day I'll have to dig out my "paper" photo album and find pictures of my upscale Viiking II.

I built it, circa 1993, from mis-sized tubes that NCR was selling dirt cheap. The tube contractor mixed up ID and OD or something; they were about 2.3" wide with really thick walls.

I had a friend make me a nose cone; I cut and sanded the centering rings.

I made a TTY tab to help align and anchor the fin tubes. The outboard fins were TTY too; a tab extended about 1/4" inside the outer edge of the tube fin. Lots of thin fiberglass reinforced it all.

It was a pretty spiffy looking model. I painted it to look like my original Viking II, and gave it a decal reading "VIKING V vii/c", which is "II" times the scale factor.

I flew it at LDRS-whatever in Argonia around 1993 (?), and numerous times at local launches. My first bad reload experience caused it to core sample. A fellow LIARS member retrofitted it with a new upper body (of a slightly larger body size) so it flew at least a few more times.

I still have some of that odd sized NCR tubing I got from Chris a while back - 2" OD , and 2.4" od - this as far as I know, was not a scre-up, but matched the old ACE tubing - the piece I have fits my old-stock Ace cone slightly tight.
unless you had different tubing, I do have some NCR 2.6" thats super heavy wall, too tight to fit a plastic cone, but close enough for a lightly sanded balsa cone.

LDRS ... was that 12 or 13 ? ( back to back in Kansas, circa 1994-5 ?) . I attended LDRS 12 - one of the best times I've had at a launch ever, even though I crashed 2 .....'
