I said it would be a "doh!" moment... Sorry, Buzz...

...So, now I've just gone out to Wally World and picked up a dozen PPBs (or more PC-ishly, TTBs (Table Tennis Balls)) and I'm saying to myself "SELF!" Which one of James' curious creations am I going to butcher first?

Even the Shadow doesn't know this time...!

TRYTON: Another Exorcism from Jay

Not much to say about this one, except that I've had it swirling around my brain for a while, *and* I was home sick from work with Post-Election Fatigue, and so on.

The original name was "710 Flyer," and then I went to look up first Proteus and then Poseidon on Wikipedia, and ended up with Triton instead. So there ya go.

Looks like a fun build, Jay. Seeing those Dv figures, though, you might consider the 2x20 streamer instead of that parachute. Not bad altitudes, even on an A8.

Craig, you are still my hero

, but Jay got it right on the money with the Buzz Nau Vector V SLS design. I did modify the rear transition as you suspected Craig, but just to lighten it up a little.

I have been having some web problems lately that are probably weather related most likely. Sorry its taking me so long to respond lately.

Pretty. A challenge, indeed.

I'm really just concentrating more right now on finishing the new website code, hoping I can clear out some "cob-webs" and other extraneous munge pulling my design time down. I'm also trying to complete a bunch of models that have been flown, but not "finished". I can't get too enthused about starting another project until I get those out of the way.

Even my own designs are holding in the queue until these items are done...

Yeah, *I* was wincing at those deployment speeds, as well.

Maybe that's why I kept adding nose weight (in an attempt to slow things down?).

The challenge was maintaining the rocket's overall shape while making the recovery system practical. Remember this "motor tube all the way through" setup from some of our e-mails last year?

Or was that earlier this year?

Jay, eliminate the excess weight and go with the streamer; use only enough ballast to get a safe margin with a "C" motor. Sometimes parachutes are more trouble than they're worth, especially with ST-7 / BT-20 diameter models. You can notch up the Dv with the streamer, since it doesn't "open up with a bang" at deployment.

After my Tau Zero flight tests (and my missing Semroc Javelin

), I've pretty much come to the conclusion that most lighter rockets are *too* light for standard 12" chutes.

Here's an "amended" version of the Tryton, minus the chute and one of the washer weights. The second set of simulations are *with* the single nose weight.
