I've actually followed the saga of this missile, albeit from afar: One of Peter Alway's drawings that shows Nike Hercules color schemes details a red/white/blue version that is labeled: "Display at VFW post 2943, Brown City MI" Googling for that VFW turned up the Google Street View shown as 'Brown City VFW 2009.jpg" At this time, the red/white/blue colors are gone, and the missile appears in overall olive drab, apparently with white 'U.S. ARMY' lettering. But the story continues... According to this story on 9/4/2016: https://www.thetimesherald.com/stor...nding/89661848/ the Brown City VFW is planning to disband, and they don't know what will become of the Nike Hercules. And on 11/13/2016: http://thecountypress.mihomepaper.c..._Hall_sold.html the VFW is disbanded, and the hall sold. Plans are to move the missile to the Vetrans Memorial on Main Street in Brown City. “The only remaining item is moving the Nike missile from the front of the former meeting hall to the Brown City Veterans Memorial on Main Street,” Holmes wrote. “Volunteers have been found to do the actual disassembly, transport, and reassembly. No associated expenses are anticipated, but should they arise, VFW Post 2945 (Sandusky) would now be responsible for them.” The Brown City, city council meeting minutes of 2/27/2017 reports: http://www.ci.brown-city.mi.us/Port...7%20council.pdf 10. Nike Missile: The missile was moved from the old VFW Hall on Maple Valley Road to the Brown City Veterans memorial on Main Street on February 23rd. So this Nike Hercules is now located at: Veterans Memorial 4270 Main St. Brown City, MI 48416 43.212497, -82.990113 Note that from Google Street View, the missile is not visible, apparently behind trees, and there is no street view on adjacent streets that might get a look. However from the overhead view, the destinctinctive shape and shadow of the vertical Nike Hercules can be seen, apparently still painted OD Green.

Google Street view:
Oh, just checking again, it can now be seen in street view. Looks like it was repainted in a light OD Green, with black 'US Army' on a white panel. Looks like a really nice memorial park.

I've got a pretty good list of what should be most Nike-Hercules displays. Attached are the names of the ones I know. I've got pics of about a half-dozen whose location I don't know. But I should also mention that I know that some on that list are gone. Bee Caves seems to have vanished to somewhere and I'm sure there are others.

It would be neet if someone could check on the status of this Nike Hercules display at:
Oak Forrest Park District, 15601 Central Ave, Oak Forrest, IL It was removed for 'restoration' (I hope). The current street view is from 10/2018 and shows the Nike boosters and interstage, probably in the process of removal. It would be nice to know if it ever got back up. I guess I could call them again to see what's happened. Edit: Never Mind. Found it in the album photos on their Parks Department Facebook page; a photo from August 2019. The Nike and interstage are gone, replaced by the Hercules only on a pole. Looks really good though; nice restoration job. And, it's probably high enough to keep vandals away from it. This is one of the few displays where you can see the bumpers on the Hercules aft cone. (The bumpers center the cone in the upper ring of the interstage.)

Alas, I can't find anyone who has a "HoJo Crush" quite as big as mine. I'll keep fingers crossed for some expanded coverage in a future edition. Love the idea of "Roadside Missiles" and would be happy to contribute to your research. I've photographed a number of these (mostly Honest Johns and Nike Hercules). My favorite is a bodly painted Honest John at a fireworks stand in South Pittsburg, TN.

Pics or it didn't happen. I bought one of the BT-60 HoJos last year. Once I get started on it, this is going to be the paint scheme. It's in front of Rockcastle County High School in Kentucky.

Just listened to the latest Rocketry Show podcast interview with Scott Binder of SBR/Fusion Rockets and formerly of Binder Design, and he confessed his love for the HoJo - his current versions are based on an actual prototype he studied and measured at an Army depot. 1.2” version: https://www.fusionrocket.biz/store-2/?model_number=LHJO His HPR version is really nice too: https://www.fusionrocket.biz/store-2/?model_number=HOJO If I didn’t have an Estes #7240 and Stickershock vinyl to go with it already on the build pile the 1.2” Binder HoJo would be on order |
