Quote:
Spin rockets--or the S-19--enable high-performance sounding rockets to be flown safely at small-impact zone ranges, such as Esrange in Sweden (and at mobile ranges that geographically-isolated phenomena, such as solar eclipse ground paths, sometimes require vehicles to be fired not far from populated areas). A 1979 solar eclipse campaign in Canada made use of S-19 guidance system-equipped Nike- or Terrier-Black Brant VC vehicles, for that mobile range operation. The S-19 could also be used in a Speedball Nike-Apache-like, Black Brant simulated IRBM or ICBM target vehicle (the UK's Bristol Aerojet Petrel sounding rocket was also used as a simulated ballistic missile target, in Royal Navy service).
