Nice, James. I'm always struck by what you come up with. It's going to be a really interesting year once we all get RS9 installed. An update on the model count: 505

I wish I had James' ability to imagine more futuristic designs. I can sketch, and to some extent visualize; but JP has a knack for really eye-popping imagery. The best I can hope for is that we (all) play off each other's ideas just a little bit.

New Design: Chronos-C
Here is the Chronos-C. It is a "downscale" of my previous Chronos NX1 design. I believe the performance and stability numbers look better with this dual C power model. Minimal velocity for stable flight is reached at approx. 26 inches. Deployment velocity is a little high but the 24" rip-stop nylon chute and recovery harness should be able to handle it.
Ring fin designs definitely take a performance hit. I simplified the ring fin and added 2 additional clear lexan pylon fins for improved structural support. I went with a metallic blue paint scheme to differentiate from the original's red. ... Bill Name: Chronos-C Engine Size: 18mm x 2 Launch Guide Length: 36.0000 In MOTOR MAX. ALTITUDE DEP. New Design Sketch...
Shooting Star is based on Series-8 tubes and nose cones. The length is about 24". It has a PPB nestled between two rings of ST-20, some open-frame fins, and a larger BT-101 ring attached at the tips of the fins and stabilized with dowel stock.
Power is 18mm B and C, but I'll have to see what RS has to say about the A8. RockSim 8 might be able to simulate this one now, as I don't see anything other than the matteboard chines to be an issue. The chines can be simulated as fins in RS8... Enjoy!

Bill, I have not posted this design to the blog list yet, as I wasn't sure you were happy with the performance and structural issues we've talked about. When you're happy with the tinkering and puttering and feel it's "ready for prime time", I'll add it to the list. I'm not running RS right now (computer issues, and waiting for RS9), so I don't know what other motors you've run through the simulations. Try running some E15s and other 'same ballpark' composites through it, then post the results for us. I'd like to see what you get with motors up into the low-F region.

Craig,
Will do. I've run sims with both E15's and E30's with limited success. I'm going to try running sims with F engines and some additional tweaks. The simplified ring-fin and the additional clear Lexan fins used in the C version of the design should help improve both the performance and structural stability of the mid-power model. I'll post updates within a day or so. Thanks, ... Bill |

New Design: Falcon Rocket Racer
This design was inspired by the aircraft from the Rocket Racing League. (http://www.rocketracingleague.com/) I chose not to include the prevalent carnards in my design.
While this model utilizes standard parachute recovery, but I would like to eventually get the model to glide recover, kicking out the motor with either a streamer or parachute for recovery. I've seen this technique used on the Estes Space Shuttle and SR-X models. The balsa fins (wings) are laminated with 110# cardstock for strength. Carbon fiber tape could also be used to strengthen the fins further, especially the longer ones. TTW is used wherever possible. A version with wing-tips will need to wait for RS9 to model properly. New Design Sketch...
"Jupiter Expeditionary Probe"
Borrows a little from the Estes #1283 USS Atlantis, #1273 USS Andromeda, and even from Battlestar Galactica... Length is about 30", with ST-8 as the main diameter and ST-10 for the crew area. Twin 12" parachutes should be enough to recover safely. Enjoy!

New Design Sketch...
"Sol Prix Racer"
Main diameter is ST-10, and the length is about 18". The port and starboard pods are ST-5, with balsa transitions for exhaust cones. The small-diameter shoulders would need to be cut off of these, and the small end should be for a BT-3. Length is about 3/8". The lower pod is larger, ST-7, and uses a short elliptical cone for the rear. Fins are 3/32" balsa sheet, and the dowel stock is also 3/32". Single 12" parachute for recovery. Enjoy!
