Default The Christmas Story House.

The Christmas Story House.

Yesterday was my wife's birthday.
Her Christmas/Birthday gift was a one night stay at the Christmas Story house.
Her other gift was The Christmas Story Pink bunny suit.
Too funny.
She had a nice time.

Awesome gift! Our favorite Christmas movie. We always have it on for the 24hr marathon from 7pm Christmas Eve to 7pm Christmas Day. It's a Hansen family tradition.

I love it, but Maria hates it. I'm lucky if I get to see one full showing each year.

Ya, that's what I've found. People either love it or hate it.

My family was big Jean Shepherd fans going back decades. "Shep" had a radio show that started in the late 50s. It featured lots of "Ralphie" stories, which were exaggerated and composited stories of his boyhood, teen years, and army life.

There were three or four versions of the BB Gun Xmas story; he refined the tale at nightclub shows and on the radio. If you search for "Jean Shepherd" on YouTube, you can his 4th of July drama, and many others. They're low-budget, but it's like finding whole chapters in "Ralphie's" life.

My father, a family friend, and I drove to a tiny theatre in southern Long Island to see A Christmas Story during its weeks-long original run.

My dad was a young kid in the late 30s / early 40s, and remembers the joys and miseries of the stuff in the movie. Like those wool snow suits that took forever to get on and off. My father confessed peeing himself in school as the teacher desperately tried to peel him out of his snow suit.

We stopped at a cold, damp beach for a walk afterwards to wind down, remembering all of the now-classic lines and laughing all over again.

The rest of the family had to wait for the VHS tape to show up in rental stores to see it. It wasn't until years later that the rest of the world discovered the movie.

Love that movie! Where is the house, and how did you arrange to stay there?

The house is in Cleveland Ohio.
3159 W. 11th St.
They charge a fee to view the house.
They do group tours and allow self guided tours which I did three years ago.
If you go, be sure to pick up the phone at the top of the stairs and listen.
They won't let you view the basement to fight the furnace, Too bad.
When I was there, they were renovating the Bumpus house to allow people to stay there also.
Across the street you can get tickets and visit the gift shop. I got a mug.
I don't know how to arrange to stay there but there is a web site.

https://www.achristmasstoryhouse.com/

BTW, the movie is based on the book "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash" By Jean Shepard.
I had a copy.

Wasn't the movie set in "Northern Indiana" (sorry, never read the book)? I always pictured Gary, Indiana - somewhere close to Chicago (the Dad was a Bears fan, right?). I remember Jean saying his father's obscenities were "still hanging somewhere over Lake Michigan." Cleveland would be more Lake Erie!

I don't know about Ralphie, but Jean Shepherd grew up in Hammond, Indiana:

If you're a real fan, and have Amazon Prime, there's a documentary in which some folks look up the locations where the movie was shot. They include Cleveland, OH, and various places in Canada!

It took a lot of work to find the Chinese restaurant! Which was never a Chinese restaurant.

IMDB Will show you the locations where they filmed it.
