Great idea, I built a Collossus in the 80s, love it. Back then I filled in the fin joints and tube joint gaps, so you can't tell it's snap together. I would let everything show if I had it to do over. How will you do the decals? |

I cut the decal close to the lettering and applied it. I tried to put it off center to a fin which looks good on the face card. It’s a little skewed because it was a total eyeball job but I thought I could get it straighter, but it’s not terrible. I like the decal a lot but it does kill the prismatic in the clear parts. Overall I think it’s a plus. Pretty sure I am not doing the fin decals, I don’t think it improves the look. I’m overthinking this E2X.

A little cold today but finally got to fly it. I checked approximate altitude by inputting the parameters in Thrustcurve which is awesome because it runs every motor that fits. Thrustcurve predicted 165 feet for a C11 and 370 feet for a D12 so with light winds as long as I aimed well I would be OK. I was set up near the soccer bleachers so planned to catch the C11 flight. I practically emptied a package of Estes wadding into it so I gave up on that, emptied the wadding and got the cellulose insulation. I made an X of two strips of wadding over the top of the tube and put the insulation on top in a big ball and gently pushed it down adding more insulation and pushing down until the tube was around 1/2 full. This makes a perfect seal and it’s cheap.
I was really concerned in the cold the chute wouldn’t open. I powdered it well and crunched it many times but it was pretty stiff. It was around 30 degrees F. I like to connect the shock cord to the nosecone then another line about the length of the nosecone, from the NC to the chute. That prevents the NC from fouling the lines. I had some recoveries where the nosecone came off but the chute stayed in the body, so I wrapped the packed chute twice with the nosecone cord which pulls it out of the body. I don’t wrap shroudlines around the chute since I’ve seen them stay wrapped. The C11-3 is not a reccomended motor but was perfect for the rocket, great delay and came down maybe 50 feet away, and I snagged it by the shock cord above the tube. I was able to collect all the recovery wadding and reused it. Now I could judge the wind and adjusted the launcher for the D12-5. I was just a great flight and I think the 5 is right at apogee. I ended up running about 100 feet out and snagging it again, so I don’t know how the fins take a landing. The first video is bad because I took off running. The second is better and shows the catch at end a bit. Second pic shows the landing location with the pad shown near the bleachers. C11 liftoff D12 Flight . I may have put the engine hook too deep because the motors are flush with the end of the motor tube after the flight, I had to use a fingernail in the inside lip of the motor to remove the C11 and I could not remove the D until I got home and could push on it with a stick. First pic is the D stuck in the tube. Looking at the aft end the simplest thing to do was to trim off the motor tube at the aft centering ring which would allow the motor to protrude a tittle more than 1/4”. I used a break off knife where I could extend the blade out enough to work around the tube, removed the end and then trimmed the rough spots.

Your Red Flare took off nicely on that C11 but if there was a substantive breeze I’d like a little more margin. Kind of wish I’d nabbed one during the Black Friday sale...neat rocket and a nice clean build - thanks for the thread! |

With a breeze would think twice about the C11 and possibly go for a Q-jet D-16, which sims a bit higher at 288 feet, since it is the motor between the 8.8n/s C11 and 16.8 n/s D12, it was tested at 12.4 n/s, but also has a longer delay so would be...interesting. |
