Did the Estes ColdPower Convertible Kits Contain RP-100?
I've recently sold two sets of shrink wrapped Estes Cold Power Convertible kits on eBay through the International Sales program. Both were rejected for shipment because:
"Items that are potentially combustible and/or carry any risk of unexpected decompression are restricted for import and export." The only thing I can even think that might have their panties in a wad is if there is a can of RP-100 in the box. Since the kits were shrink wrapped, I did not open them up to check them. Does any one know if those kits (Shark #1111, Yankee 5 #1112, or Marauder #1110) came with a can of RP-100 in the box? Thanks! Matt |

Matt-
Looks like they did. See the link below to the Estes 1975 catalog and look in the upper right corner of page 46 (left hand page). The text there seems to indicate each came with a 7.5 oz can of propellant. Link: http://www.ninfinger.org/rockets/ca...75/75est46.html Earl

RP-100 is the same thing as R-12 Refrigerant. Dichlorodifluoromethane.
NOT flammable at all.

Thanks, Earl. I remember the "small" can of RP-100. I bet they x-rayed the boxes at some time and flagged it that way.

They must have seen the "aerosol" can, which in modern times (now, since late 70's) use flammable propellants (due to SUPPOSED ozone deteriation from fluorocarbon propellant) for aerosols.
Back then when these were produced, most aerosol cans used non-flammable fluorocarbon propellants.

"RP-100" was nothing more than a can of R-12 Freon . . .
