Default Silent Running, the movie, 1972

Silient Running, the movie, 1972
I was in sixth grade, twelve's years old when this movie came out.
It impacted my history teacher significantly.
She was into greenhouse gasses greatly.
I was impressed.
She was into greenhouse gasses of this planet and showed her concern of the earth way
back then.
She was way before her time.
I wish I could contact her today but unfortunately I am unable to.
She was a great teacher.

An awesome Sci-Fi movie that doesn't get enough attention. Special Effects by Douglas Trumbull who did 2001: A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Blade Runner to name a few.

I loved the little robots. I was 10 when I first saw it with my family in '72 at the 41 Twin Outdoor Drive-In Theater.

It's Huey, Duey, and Louie. You got the order right but it sounds wrong.
I can't remember which one they lost and which one survived the Valley Forge destruction.
Joan Biez sang the the song "In The Sun".
I got to see her in concert in the mid 1990's.
I wanted to hear her sing that song, but it was a one off for just the movie.

Joan Baez… if you’re inclined to look her up.

Louie (Drone 3; the robots were called drones [which is accurate, because "drone" also means "worker," as with bees]) was lost when the Valley Forge passed through Saturn's rings. Afterward, Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern), in a spacesuit, went out on deck and found one of Louie's legs, wedged into the grid-type deck. He reverently pulled it free, and looked up to see Huey and Duey standing nearby, looking on sadly, as he also was. He said (not verbatim, but this is close): "I know you feel sad about Louie, but he got careless! Do you see what happens when you get careless? Okay--get back to your work." Regarding Joan Baez:

My father, a World War II combat veteran, was infuriated by what Joan Baez and Jane Fonda did in connection with the Vietnam War, but he liked "Silent Running," including Joan Baez's song "In the Sun." He also said, "What she did then [during Vietnam] angered me, but she later said 'I was duped by the North Vietnamese, and what I did resulted in our POWs being treated worse,' so I can't condemn her; everyone makes mistakes." More recently:

One day about four years ago, I was having lunch with two friends, John and Will--both disabled (in/by combat) Vietnam combat veterans--when the subject of Jane Fonda came up. She had, not long before, told the whole story of what happened during her infamous visit to North Vietnam in 1972 (which the North Vietnamese played up for its great propaganda value, of course). She said, "I didn't speak Vietnamese, and only one government-provided escort spoke English. Before I quite knew what was going on, I was ushered over to that anti-aircraft gun and invited to sit on its seat. Everyone was smiling and laughing, and the next thing I knew, North Vietnamese photographers with big press cameras and movie cameras appeared, and started filming me. Looking back on it now, it wasn't the smartest thing I ever did--we just wanted to end a bloody conflict that didn't seem to have any end." Also:

I was expecting my Vietnam combat veteran friends to curse her and call her Hanoi Jane, but nothing of the sort happened. Will calmly said, "I believe her. The North Vietnamese were always looking for things and people they could use for propaganda, and they used her visit for that. She wasn't a Communist; she just wanted to end the war. I can't hate her for that." John heartily agreed, and added:

"After I was over there for a while, it became pretty obvious that LBJ and McNamara [President Johnson, and his Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, who both owned many shares of stock in defense contractors] were our real enemies--they were making money hand over fist, on everything from infrared aircraft recon photos [John was involved with those] to helicopter gunships and weapon systems, despite their money going into blind trusts. We could have won the war immediately on several occasions, but the order for that final push never came. They wanted that war to just keep going, so that they could keep on making money from it!" Will nodded vigorously, and expressed his strong dislike for LBJ and McNamara; he too had been in-country (South Vietnam) for quite a few years, and he also noticed that the war could have been decisively won, and quickly, on several occasions, but that for some reason those victories were always allowed to slip away (the TV documentary series "Battlefield Vietnam" covers these missed opportunities, as part of the history of the war--on both sides), and:

While over there, he also learned that President Johnson and SecDef McNamara had stocks in the Vietnam-involved defense contractors, but that they claimed it was no conflict of interests, because their stocks were in blind trusts (his and John's reactions [separately, as they didn't meet until years later, here in Fairbanks], when they saw those statements of LBJ's and McNamara's on the news in Vietnam, was, "Do they think we soldiers are *that* ^%$# stupid!?!?")--apparently LBJ and McNamara did. Even CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite (who flew on at least one B-17 combat mission in World War II as a young war correspondent, even firing at enemy aircraft: https://www.americanairmuseum.com/person/220269 ) turned against LBJ in 1968, after he saw what was--and wasn't--happening in Vietnam. That was "the last straw" that persuaded Johnson not to seek election in 1968; he said, "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost the country."

Ahhh, yes, Walter Crankase as my father would call him.
He was my father's favorite news anchor.
I miss both of them.

The Walter Cronkite we all saw on TV is not the real person, at all.

Take a look at this video . . .
