Default FlisKits: New un-dipped Q2 igniters NOW AVAILABLE!

The new Un-Dipped Q2 Igniters from Quest are now available on the FlisKits web site!

These igniters are identical to the current Quest Aerospace Q2 igniters but they are "un-dipped", meaning that they have no pyrogen on the tip.

The advantage here is that this makes these igniters perfectly suited for use with micromaxx motors! (Dipped igniters typically do not fit in the nozzle of these very small motors)

The other advantage to these iginters is that you don't have to fuss with taking the provided micromaxx igniters apart to use them (a requirement with many FlisKits Micro to the MAXX kits and also necessary if you wish to use your standard rocket launch controller to launch these micro models.

Check'em out on our web site by clicking on PRODUCTS then MICROMAXX. You will see the link to motors at the top of that page. Or, you could just Click This Link

Have fun!

Very cool! I'll have to pick some up next time I order, which means you need to break loose something from your lab one of these days. Maybe one of those baby Saturns?

Is this a Flis exclusive/something Quest did special for you, or do you think they'll be offering it themselves as well?

At one point I beleive it was going to be exclusive, but no formal agreement was ever made. I do beleive that Quest may offer them but I have no confirmation of this.

Our announcement has led to strong orders for them and I am already preparing a re-order. It looks like this is a desired igniter.

Well, I desire it for sure. I'll just be on the sidelines for a month or so while I wade through post-NARAM piles of rockets to build, bills to pay, etc.

I'm actually running relatively low on MMX motor stockpiles, having burned through about 50 of 'em on the Syouz cluster and related bench tests. When Bill Stine made that comment on possibility of bulk packs for MMX's along the lines of "sure--how big do you want 'em" I was intrigued. There are probably only half a dozen of us at most that would even think about ordering a few hundred at a time, but I'd be one of 'em. I'd also think about 100 or so of the new igniters. Even though making my own out of plain nichrome wire is pretty easy, those little built-in plugs look sweet!

What "little built-in plugs" are you talking about?

In the photo at http://www.fliskits.com/products/ro.../mmx_motors.htm it looked like there was a little plastic bead separating the two leads. The close-up, though, looks like that wouldn't work as a plug--way too far back from the nichrome loop to be anywhere near the motor nozzle. Looks instead like its job is to keep the leads separate, not help hold the igniter in place.

Oh well, back to breaking off the ends of toothpicks...

Yup, the bead just keeps the wires separated. This igniter design is a knock-off of the old MRC igniters. Those were coveted by BTC's.

Yeah, other than not having to pull a plastic case apart, the method of igniter installation is very similar. Also, that small bead is glass not plastic fwiw...

Here are some images that I include with a preliminary instruction sheet with the igniters.

The first one shows the toothpick method
Next is the wadding ball method (using a very small ball of wadding as a plug)
the last shows using a strip of masking tape.

I've tried all 3 successfully. The long leads are very nice and not having to crack open a plastic case is wonderful
