Ceseronis come with a delay that you drill out to what you want so I set the sim to deploy at apogee. I believe altitude with the H was 2,800 and the optimum delay was 10~11 seconds.

Default New Design: Star Lancer

Here is another 18mm design for the VR catagory. I threw wood dowels on the fin tips mainly to spice it up a bit. I seem to be slowly increasing my Rocksim database with Semroc nose cones and other parts as well.

Thanks and Enjoy, JP

Exclamation New Plan -- Andromeda

A sister-ship to the older Antares design, the Andromeda has some good performance numbers in spite of its frail looks. With proper reinforcement of the fins (lamination of the outer surfaces with label stock, or even a woven FG cloth), the fins should hold up to the lift-off and landing stresses. Recovers under a 12" parachute, which should be sufficient.

Addendum: Although not drawn this way in the RKT file, one possible reinforcement (and dress-up) would be the addition of 1/8" diameter dowels in the fin tips and intermediate connectors [where the joints narrow down], bridging the gaps instead of plain balsa. I may have to break down and PDF this one, since there is some special work that has to be done with the fins at the shrouds.

Length: 24"
Diameter: 1.34" (ST-13 reactor shrouds)
Fin Span: 5.82"
Weight: 1.83 oz

All motors can launch safely from a 36" standard rod.

A8-3......145'......Dv 16 FPS
B4-4......382'......Dv 3 FPS
B6-4......391'......Dv 5 FPS
C6-5......899'......Dv 12 FPS

Enjoy!

What I really like is it lends itself well to a lot of customizing like Scott's USS Odyssey. BTW - I'm getting close to posting photos of my Odyssey. That kit is just too much fun to add details to it.

Exclamation New Plan -- Andromeda SLS (29mm)

OK, folks...

Here is the larger SLS version of the Andromeda that I hinted at earlier. This one has great performance, and most of the motor selections get safely to speed on a 48" x 1/4" steel rod. Two motors (noted in the list) will need 60" rods.

F62T-6.........884'......Dv 15 FPS
F52-8.........1450'......Dv 9 FPS
F40-7.........1562'......Dv 21 FPS
G38FJ-7.......1786'......Dv 27 FPS......60" rod
G33-7.........1996'......Dv 27 FPS......60" rod
G77R-10.......2138'......Dv 21 FPS
G79W-10.......2217'......Dv 20 FPS
H128W-10......3116'......Dv 25 FPS

3/16" thick aircraft plywood for the fins, and I added 1/4" dowels to the fins on this one both as decoration (I call them armature coils) and as reinforcements. Use this as a pattern for reinforcing the smaller version with 1/8" dowels.

Addendum -- Since there is no way to TTW these fins, you will need to add some reinforcement to the fin-tube joints, such as FG cloth, CF cloth, or a combination of woven cloths. I believe the right reinforcement at the joint will be sufficient to handle the stresses.

Enjoy!

Default New DEsign: "Danger Will Robinson"

Just a Little funny business here. I was looking up some Lost in Space stuff on the net and thought I would give this robot as attempt. I don't remember the name of this particular Robot but it seem to make a fair design. On B4-2 ND B6-2 this design gets an average altitude of about 130 feet with good DV's. It goes unstable with a C6-3 because there is limited room for more nose wieght without drilling out the NC.

Enjoy and Thanks Again, JP

I think the L.I.S. robot was "Robby", or "Robbie"...

Shift the thrust block just slightly forward of where it is, so that you leave 1/4" of the motor sticking out. I found the sim to come out a little better with the motor in this position than sticking farther out at the rear. I guess it has to do with the weight distribution; this design is extremely short-coupled, so a little weight in one place can make a big difference. I found the Dv's were better (lower) with the motor shifted forward just that short distance.

Interesting design, James. Fits into your "Spaceman/Spacewoman/Journeyman" theme well...

Exclamation New Plan -- Quasi-Dodo

OK, so we're back onto a "Goony" theme today. Serious rocketry has to take a break once in awhile -- we gotta recharge the old bat'trees now and then...

Introducing the Quasi-Dodo, a rip-off of the Quest Superbird and some of James Pierson's ringed wonders, combined with my obsessive-compulsive disorder with open-frame fins. RockSim says it will fly, however. It also complies (barely) with the VR class specifications...

As noted, start with a Quest Superbird. You can build the model as shown in the kit instructions up to the point where the fins would go on. If you like the kit components for the motor mount, knock yourself out. The new RockSim fin patterns will have to be cut into two pieces, to allow for the rings to fit properly. (I'll whip out some true templates later...) Use a sanding twig to remove the areas where the rings need to fit into.

Only one motor is recommended for this bird:

C6-5......659'......Dv 10 FPS......36" launch rod

The launch lugs are mounted on standoffs to clear the rings.

Enjoy!
