Great F-104 videos. It looks like it glides better than your 101 and 105 models.
Really likes the vertical roll on flight #2. Now you need to do a F-106 to complete the series.

I'm surprised at the variation in flight times. Were you using the same sized engine in all cases? First flight (including boost) 1:26, second 1:05, third 45 seconds.

Same motors. First flight was optimal, second flight wasn't as vertical a boost, due to me, third the upper wind changed direction and I wound up gliding downwind for the most part as I was trying to avoid flying close to the early morning sun for my approach and landing. Sometimes I'll get some extra lifting air over the field as well and get an extremely long flight, a minute is about what I expected based on the wing area/loading, the first flight was pretty good. Pitch over at boost finish can also make a big difference as well as hard banking in turns....You are right and I noticed it too, as I time my flights, that the difference was much larger than I normally see.

Great work, for sure! But I can't understand why you keep landing on the pavement when you have grass next to the runway. As nice as you finished the models, they won't stay that way I'm thinking...

It's not pavement, the runway surface is cloth geotex matting material and is quite soft, plus I have nylon skids built in, it may sound loud on video but there isn't any damage. The grass area is rougher and can grab control surfaces like on the f105 so I prefer the runway. Trust me, I've done this a few tines😃
I've got many dozens of flights on my models with no damage from the runway. Plus landing in the grass I have to pick grass out of my control horns afterward And, what's better than hitting the centerline of the runway Last edited by burkefj : 08-24-2016 at 09:05 AM. |

How is the glide time on the "SR-71" ?
I would imagine quite AWFUL. How about a U-2 ? The nose is nearly the correct shape, and I'd bet the glide times would be great if you could keep the wings from being ripped off under boost. A B-58 Hustler has the correct nose shape too....

The A-12 is about the same as the other deltas, seems like it wouldn't be, but again wing area and wing loading I try to make similar...50 seconds first glide, a minute 5 the second, and just under a minute for the third glide.

I think a skinny-winged U-2 would work if you put a thin carbon-fibre reinforcing spar epoxied to the wing to stiffen it.
Your motor does not look like a high-average thrust, so it would work. I bet you could easily quadruple those glide times with a U-2 'like' design.

I do use carbon spars in my wings, but a straight carbon spar won't help twisting/flutter, my speeds get to about 88fps at max, I just haven't tried a long skinny wing, I'm more of a fan of the fighters and rocketplanes which don't typically have those. Again, if I wanted performance I'd modify a dlg...I just wanted things that looked cool. For me the exciting parts are the boost and landing, the rest is just waiting Another thing is the long chord wings are pretty tolerant of the cg shift and nose heavy condition after motor burnout, I don't know if the long skinny wing chord would be, especially on a non swept wing like the U-2, normally if running a long skinny wing you aren't running a motor in the tail but up at the cg location.
