One idea, for motor retention you could epoxy a short length of say 1/8" threaded rod in the center of the cluster of motor tubes and then use a nut and washer to hold all three motors. That's what I did with my Astron Cobra cluster, but with 3/16" threaded rod. I can provide a photo if anyone is interested.

I think I understand the idea, and that would make a great addition to the Barclone Accessories page. It would probably work better than either tape or hooks.

Thanks!

Especially a model with motor tubes that are flush with the main body tube. Here's a photo. (I know.. the Cobra's still nekkid. I'm hoping ot do some painting this weekend)

Lightbulb New Design: Firebrand (ZBQM-111A)

Here a design called the Firebrand that is based off of the Firebrand ZBQM-111A Target Drone. I really like these pilotless bird and its too bad most of them and others were destined to be aerial target drones shot down in a blaze of glory. Cool

Thanks Again and Enjoy, JP

Exclamation Starting a New Class of Designs

The "Schoolyard Sounders" series has been great, and it shows what can be done on limited power. Clearly, there are more designs for this 'class' of design out there, waiting to be drawn up...

Now, I want to open up another class of model, using up to "C" motors, but limiting the top altitude to no greater than 700'. In fact, limiting the flights to 600', or even 500', would be preferable. The idea is to keep the model clearly in visible range, not simply having it disappear to a tiny dot in the sky. The "B" and "C" motors will allow for larger models as well as the greater smoke and roar factor.

There are a lot of designs that fit this category already, so I'm looking for something that isn't immediately available commercially. These designs should fly well, with good stability margins. Use RockSim to design and test these designs, as usual.

The design I've attached is a very simple model in this class, a 3FNC using SEMROC components, and also using the laser-cut fins from their Retro-Repro Astro-1 kit. It is not intended to be complicated, rather just a "starting point" for the series. As I've said before, simple models get flown more often because they're simple. Complex models with goo-gahs and whizz-bangs tacked on generally loose some of these each flight, so they're not as much fun to fly on a regular basis. This is going to be a 'sport' class, where the smoke and fire of larger motors draw the attention.

I call this initial design Astro-13X.

B6-4......265'......Dv 19 FPS......36" guide
C6-5......689'......Dv 10 FPS......36" guide

I have a few other ideas in this category to try out, including some with Tau influence, and some with open-frame-fin ideas. Remember, flame, smoke, and roar are the features I'm looking for in this class, not altitude. I'm also looking for suggestions as to what this class should be named...

Enjoy!

Thumbs up I got it!

Key words here are: "Visible Range" and I hereby dub the " VR Class" Anyway thats got my vote.

Point taken, however I just love it when a part flies off now and again. I can improve that design by learning form the engineering failure.

Thanks Again,

Lightbulb New Design: Mean Streak

I finally was able to create a design using all Semroc parts. This 3FNC design is designed to look impressive on the pad as well as in the air. Its 36.1 " tall and on a C6-5 has a max altitude of 463 feet. It reminds me of my first kit I ever built which was the Estes Golliath.

Thanks and Enjoy, JP

"VR Class" sounds good. Let's see if any other suggestions pop up before we 'officially' set it in stone, but I like it, too.

Thanks!

I thought I had posted this design a long time ago, but can't find the post if I did.

This is a design I scratched out way back in the early 70's. The fin tips and root are built up on the actual model ala Astron Constellation fin tips, but I didn't go through the trouble to try and simulate that in Rocksim.

The main fins don't have quite the same shape as the Connie, but I think I understand what you're describing about the tips: Build the tips up using the patterns and instructions from the Astron Constellation.

Nice design, Buzz. Not overly complicated, reasonably good performance on the B6-4; you need to add runs to the sim with the C6-5. This produces the best results for "C" motors, with an altitude of 1128' and a Dv of 10 FPS. This might actually wind up in my "build queue #2"...

Thanks Craig. I'll post a photo of the real fins tomorrow.
