This time around I deleted the engine hooks and went with center retention.
I also stretched it a little to make more room for the decals. New fins are basswood instead of balsa.
My whole fleet basically features bright color catalog paint jobs, so I went a little more vintage this time.
I found a pic of an Albatross biplane with flying circus livery and attempted to copy it as best I could.
It's still a work in progress, but I'm getting closer and intend to fly it soon.
Drei Maxxx ... now that my friend, is awesome! Excellent job with the decals too Erik.

Thanks guys. That camo was tricky to apply. I've never wrapped a rocket like that before.
I think I know how I'm going to finish it, so I will post a few more pics soon.

Default Alpha Update

I got the big Alpha into primer this afternoon.
A few evenings of filling and sanding have it looking like it used to.
The fins will be a darker shade of blue this time around to better match the decals, and I'm going to delete the paint break and make the whole tube white.
I made a few more decals for it that are variations on the originals.
The balsa nose had accumulated ten years worth of dents and dings so I fixed them too.
It's typical northeast spring weather here this upcoming week so paint will happen when it can.

Is that Alpha a BT-80? I assume its scratch-built, since you mention a balsa nose cone?

It is trying to become Springtime here. If the wind stops blowing, the sun makes it feel warm, but if the wind is blowing just a little, it feels freezing-cold outside. I got a bit of primer sprayed, and a small nose cone, since I could paint during a calm.

Yes, it is BT-80 but it's not scratchbuilt, even though it really looks the part.
When my #1291 Maxi Alpha cato'd in 2010, Estes' customer service replaced both the engines and the rocket.
Since the 1291 was OOP by that time, they sent me an MA3. I didn't like the thin plastic fins it used so I upgraded them to basswood.
I pirated the PNC-80K nose from the kit to use on my scratchbuilt 29mm version of the 1291, leaving the MA3 without a cone. The PNC-80K isn't sold separately anymore but I was able to get a balsa version from Semroc.

That Rocketarium cone was the first thing I noticed when I discovered their site, which was right after I bought the balsa one.
Now that I don't need one anymore, I have accumulated at least 6 through Black Friday Estes kit sales.
When I got the Semroc balsa cone it was truly a work of art. It was a shame to cover it with paint.

Default Martian Chronicles

Fresh off the bench today is my clone of the Centuri Mars Project dealer promotion.
It sports a four fin 3D can, a new BT-56 cone, and a 24mm mount.

Default Maxi Alpha 3 finished

Final coats of paint went on this week and my big Alpha is now flight ready.
The '3' decal was done in Photoshop and the stripes are just pieces of label stock painted at the same time as the model.
I was going to use regular vinyl pinstripe tape but decided I didn't want an extra 25ft of each color left over.
Paint was Rusto Gloss White, Sunrise Red, and 2X Deep Blue.
If the weather holds, I may try to fly it next weekend.

Awesome! Always wanted to do one of these, but I kept getting outbid. First one I've ever seen finished.
