Estes Mercury Atlas #2111 Shroud Cutting Question???
Let me start off by saying that the kit instructions aren't clear on how to cut the shrouds out.
The Picture on page 3 section 4 shows where to cut the shrouds, but their is actually an extra segment that the picture doesn't show for the top section of the shrouds. I notice that a lot of people leave this section attached when building the model, it's the only way to have a half moon cover at the top of the shrouds. A coarse this moves the equipment pods higher up on the model by almost 1/2". But all the pictures in the instructions, they show shorter cut shrouds, but as I mentioned, Page 3 section 4 doesn't show the extra segment that makes up the shrouds true length. Compare the builder's model picture to page 3 pictures in the instructions for a clear picture of what I'm talking about. So my question is for those that built this kit, where did you cut yours? Thank you!

Going from memory hear (I'm away from home so I can't go check one of my built Mercury Atlas's), but I believe there is a small indentation going around the shroud a short distance from the top - you cut it there.

I’m currently building this model too. I tried to attach a photo of what I did, but it would not let me insert the photo. I did the shorter shroud. The half moon part was left on the discarded piece. The shroud is open at the top. It is covered by the pods, but there is a tiny gap that I filled. Either way you are probably fine.

The builders' picture appears to show the correct procedure.
Half moon segment over the straight extended segment at the top of the shroud butts up against the end of the equipment pod fairing. As in the real rocket, the two parts do not blend into one another.

Here's a better picture from step 7 of the instructions.
Shows both long and short equipment pod fairings being glued on. Note that both shrouds have the short top segment still attached.
