Default Alaska rocket parts reward! (link)

Hello All,

Anyone who happens across fallen sounding rocket parts in Alaska could make a quick $600 to $1200, as this reward poster (see: https://www.pfrr.alaska.edu/files/p...very-poster.pdf ) from the Poker Flat Research Range https://www.pfrr.alaska.edu/ shows. (With orbit analysis software--sounding rocket trajectories *are* orbits, which just happen to intercept the Earth's surface--and with post-impact trajectory information, searchers could greatly narrow down their search areas [although detached fins, complete & partial tail assemblies, and spent motors with all or some of their fins still attached, probably drift significant distances from their nominal, computed descent paths].)

Hey J, this sound's like it would of had been fun twenty years ago. Now with winter coming soon, at this time I do not plan any hiking in Alaska. and I would not like to become a grizzles hibernation meal. on the other hand this is a great time of year to walk in the woods in Texas,
to look for parts from the Space Shuttle Columbia. All our best to you, Neal

I wouldn't wander around any Alaska wilderness without my trusty .458 Lott Safari Magnum ELEPHANT rifle.

Then again, I don't wander around any "wilderness" without a GUIDE. Not my cup of Tea. EVER.

Far better to mountain bike the wilderness trails. Used to have a 3-defence system for bears:
#1 was a Big Rottweiler (past away years ago so, now I'm down to two)

Past/Now: Handle bar bag with Bear Defense spray, and Galco holster with a Ruger Super Red Hawk loaded with Buffalo Bore 340 gr at 1425 fps.

Do have a big bell on handle bars to make noise while cruising the trails. It rattles around so no surprises if we happened to sneak up on a bear. A startled moose is just as dangerous!!!

Nomad used to run ahead and lead my kids, he watched them better than a parent when we were out in the wilderness.

Used to take my kids mountain bike camping when my youngest was 10 y/o. She is 36 now.

Would put my son up front, daughter in the middle and I would follow.

Resurrection Trail is 38.8 miles of single track: Hope, Alaska to Cooper Landing.

Only way to access by car is at either end. Other single track tie in from different locations. Brown, Black bear, wolves, caribou, sheep, goat and moose can be seen at times. The nearest road is miles and miles away.

The lakes have cabins that can be rented from the USFS. Cabins have canoes to use for fishing. Tools to get fire wood, etc..

We used to camp as a family at the tent sites along the trail.

BTW- With the leaves gone, easier to see what you're looking for. Snow in places though.

I like my chances with the .458 Lott with 500gr soft-points at 2450fps over any handgun round.
Well over 6600 lb/ft of bone-crushing bear stopper. Makes a real mess.
I have no problem with the recoil either.
Just have to roll with it.
Makes a 458 Win Mag seem like a pip-squeak, yet those rounds can be fired in the same rifle.
No scope, just good open "express" sights.
Then again, a well placed 62gr 5.56 SS109 penetrator round from one of my ARs will stop a bear right now ith a head shot. I'd rather have that than any handgun as well.
I also have a single-shot 45/70 with handloads pushed to the energy level of a 375 H&H that will work too.
That thing is painful to fire due to light weight.
My brother used that for deer hunting and got scope-smacked. That was ugly.

Default Awesome Collection

All very nice rounds. Would need a swivel handle bar mount to use them on a mountain bike.

Like the 44 Revolver: lightweight, small in size, packs big punch, and is at my side wherever I go in the woods.

Others have proven the 44 mag works for bear protection when needed.

One guy hit a brown bear 2 times with a 357 , finally had to kill it with the 357 shoved inside the bears mouth, newspaper sports reporter on a hiking trip.

Shot a lever action .458 a colonel had back in the 80s-at the range on a bring and shoot Saturday. Not sure what it was other than Lever Action and the caliber, kicked like a 10ga slug will.

It's definitely a young person's game. You don't go into the woods here unarmed--the greater the firepower, the better. Even moose are deadly, if you get between a mother moose and her calf or calves.

I’ve prepared and eaten almost all types of North American wild game—and my LEAST favorite is definitely bear, mainly because it's a little………….

……wait for it…….

I have had the pleasure of eating the following wild 4-legged game:
Deer
Elk
Caribou
Moose.
Rabbit/Hare
Squirrel

Caribou, Moose, and Elk are great.
Deer; Meh...

I like Pheasant and Duck above all those.

I have carried that 458 Lott hunting Deer in Michigan.
Wayyyy too much gun, but I have yet to have an animal protest "Hey man, you're usin' too much gun !"

That .458 Lott hits harder than RONNIE Lott !

With all of that acreage, and all of the equipment, fuel, and time that might be necessary to even have a chance to locate the rocket parts, the intrepid searcher(s) might not even break even with the reward if they found the stuff. It would almost have to be a labor of love.
