Default Estes TK-4/#804 mini-Brute Hornet

I thought I'd work up a mini-Brute mate for the AERO-HI.

The 1972 catalog photo (http://www.ninfinger.org/rockets/no...a/72est008.html) presents the model with a rather charmless livery, so I opted for the marginally jazzier kit face card scheme. I couldn’t bring myself to add the ladybug marking, instead going with the little Hornet marking found on the big Centuri #5341 Magnum Hornet decal sheet (http://www.spacemodeling.org/jimz/cen5341.htm).

Construction was per plan but for the fins, where I substituted basswood for balsa, finishing them with Silkspan and three coats of Nitrate dope. The nose was sealed with Brodak Sanding Sealer.

The paint is airbrushed lacquer from GSI’s Mr. Color line, the yellow GSI’s #329 FS13538 Yellow, the black GSI’s #2 Black. The topcoat is GSI’s GX100 Super Clear Gloss III.

Nice work, John, the finishing is perfect! Did you use BT-30 parts from eRockets?

The BT-30 in this model came from a small stock I bought directly from Semroc some years ago. It seems a quality of this hobby, at least for me, that what I buy doesn't seem to get built till some (considerably long) time later.

Nice little Mini-Brute. I don't think that the Hornet ever came with the little "bug" decal like the Mini Bertha, Mosquito, or Screamer. Your decals are imaginative and look good. What fin pattern did you use?

Hi Wolf;

Thanks.

To your point, I don't think any decals ever came with the kit. The ladybug marking, though, does show up on the kit face card, as does the Estes logo.

Pretty sure the fin template came from JimZ. The instruction set on YORP doesn't seem to include the fin template.

I built a lot of mini-brute kits in the late 70's and early 80's.
Not a single one came with one of those mini-brute "bug" decals shown in various catalogs.
Always felt gypped about that.

I cloned one of these with one of my first orders from BMS, but I forgot the balsa coupler. No problem, I just made my own. Slight problem, I didn't do a great job on it. I'm slightly embarrassed at how long it took me to figure out that the bug decals actually spelled something. It took picking up an old built bird off of eBay that I noticed.
