does anybody know what kind of plastic this was? polystyrene? The Estes catalog says use butyrate dope for gluing and filleting. What would the modern day equivalent plastic glue?

This was butyrate plastic! Essentially a sheet of clear dope.

I was very lucky, when shopping for repair materials for my Titan II, to find a model-plane-oriented hobby shop that had some sheets in stock. It is possible that SIG or a similar outfit still carries it.

I used CA to attach the fins, and a slurry of melted down (in acetone) shards of the material for the fillet for the fillets.

Dope thinner is the best material to bond the fins when using Butyrate.
It literally welds the material.

I do not know if they still make these, but I used to make my clear fins out of the Protection
covers for welding masks. I could get 12- 4" x 2" protectors for $ 3.00 . these were throw away
covers to keep the lens from get messed up. I could make 2 fins from each protector by cutting
at an angle at center. I would make a wedge fin on my Saturn V, I used CA to attach the to the
tubes for the Space Shuttle and the Titan III .
