Smile X-Wing Maxi Brute

This is an Olde Rocket I've been working on for quite a few months now. My plan was to have it ready for May the Fourth, so I'm only 6 months late.

A little backstory - I received a built X-Wing Maxi Brute a few years ago from WOOSH member Fred Jarosch's estate, and on it's 2nd launch, using an E15-4, it took a severe turn into the wind, and hit the ground before motor eject. It was a total loss. I started looking for a replacement, and after a year or so, I won a bid on an unbuilt kit for $75 - the box was in sad shape, but parts were all intact.

I salvaged a few parts from the crash, and was able to use some on this build, so it's sort of a rebuild of Fred's, with only 90% new parts.

Oh, and the decals were shot, even with a coat of liquid decal film, but I found that Mark @ StickerShock had vinyl decals for the NCR kit, of the same scale, and they worked great.

It's built essentially stock, with a stouter ST-9 motor tube, no engine block, kevlar shock cord, and an an extra 1 oz of nose weight. It came out at 15.2oz, quite a bit heavier than the stated 11oz, even though I was very light on the paint. So, the next question is, what to fly it on, come spring? My choices are E28, F24, or F35 (I don't trust SU motors enough for this). I'd prefer the lower thrust of the F24, which a quick sim shows about 475', but apogee at 3s after burnout. I'm not sure it can handle the thrust of an E28 or F35, but they would give a safer flight profile.

There are, of course, a few flaws in the build, but it's certainly good enough to fly!

Let's just say you're six months early for May the Fourth, 2017.

I have flown mine a few times with the F24, I do not know what mine weighs, it's not light.

I built mine back in 2005, but converted it to use the plugged A10's in the jet engines to supplement the D12 core. Only glitch is I used a D12-5 for the first (and to date, only) flight as the five second delay is too long. I didn't take into account the amount of drag the design entails.

That's good to know, thanks. It seemed to handle the thrust just fine?

Cool, if this lasts beyond the first couple flights, I may have to try that. Perhaps an E12 with 4xA10, to get a little more altitude?

The shorter delay D12-3 should do just fine. That's what I'm doing the next time I fly it.

I built one recently and painted it similar to Poe's X-Wing in the new film. It flew fine, mostly, on a D12-3 motor. The up part was good and ejection happened close to apogee. But, the shock cord wasn't attached well and, as a result, I now have the parts to build another.

The Aerotech RMS 24 F24W is a great motor for the Maxi X-Wing as well as all the other Estes "Maxi Brutes".
It is my "go to" motor for all Estes Maxi Brutes except the 'stock' Maxi Alpha 3. It WILL rip the fins off those unless properly glued/filleted on with EPOXY.

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, TURMOIL, FIASCOS, and HAVOC !

What do your builds weigh, without motor? A D12-3 on mine sims to about 100', with 1.7s burnout to apogee, yikes! If I add 4xA10, I get 200', 2.4s burnout. Better speed off the rod, but still scary deployment, given the low altitude.
