Default Original Multi-Roc sustainer fin scan sought - and already received!

Does anyone have access to a first version Estes 1329 Multi-Roc kit who is willing to scan the upper stage fin sheet (preferably with a ruler alongside)?

The package for this model on JimZ is pretty good, but it's missing the upper stage fins (and there is no ruler on the fins or decals in it). I'm trying to ascertain where else besides the different nose cone and payload adapter used and the dropping of the motor hook that the re-release that ran from 2018 to 2022 (and was carried by Hobby Lobby for some of that time) differs from the first edition.

It looks like the booster fin span was slightly increased on the recent version vs. the first version (based on laying a laser cut part on the printed scan from the JimZ package) but I've no frame of reference for the upper stage.

I'm seriously considering doing one of these for Classic Model at NARAM-64 and am looking for all the data for the 1980-1981 version I can get.

Scott doesn't have this model on YORP.

I've just scanned the later release kit. I can send that to Scott (if a 30 Mb file isn't too big — the face card file turned out kinda huge).

Thanks.

I think I can cover you on the original. It may be a bit later tonight though. Not currently at my main computer that contains all my files.

Ok, was able to get to it a bit quicker than I thought. Here are some files that I think will cover what you need. Anything else you can identify you need that would be in an original kit, let me know.

Perfect! I've printed the fins and decals out to compare with the contemporary kit and your scans match those on JimZ. The booster fins of the current version (it's still on the Estes web site, even if not in the 2023 catalog) have about 1/16 inch additional span and the sustainer fins have about 3/32 inch additional span. Both match on the other three edges. The decals all seem to match exactly old to new.

Thank you!!

I suppose I could ask for a similar with-ruler scan of the glider sheet, though what you've already given increases my confidence in the other scans.

(well, I'd be in the market for an original kit to build....but I figure that's quite a stretch.....)

Here is the glider balsa sheet. I am afraid the die-cutting, in the case of this kit, was so clean that it is hard to see the die-cut lines. However, if you zoom in on the image you can make out most of them I think.

The original kit does come up on eBay now and then, so don't completely discount the possibility of snagging one. I'll be keeping my eye open for you also.

I have a scan I did last year with what you need, but it is too big to upload. Do you have another way I can get it to you?

Yeah, I see that….nice to have new dies. They probably never wore them out since the Multi-Roc was only in three catalogs 1979 - 1981.

There are a bunch of the current release kits up on eBay but right now one can also buy one of those from Estes themselves, or from AC Supply, for less.

I’ve only just looked in the last few days so haven’t seen any of the first version on eBay.

I have enough parts to make a Hobby Lobby clearance example of the current release look just like the original I think. I have a blow-molded PNC-50X and I have an NB-50. Sitting on the table with both stages one can’t see the motor hook, so I think there I will follow the current kit and not use one (though I do have some original EH-2-style hooks on hand). I’m still dithering about whether to shorten the fin spans the small amount it would take to match the original’s die-cut parts. It’s not like I’m going to be submitting the scans of the originals as part of my documentation package for Classic Model, and even if I did, I would not expect the judges to be measuring them. I figure two sets of fins that are nice and uniform will be less likely to attract a judge’s negative attention than if I don’t do a good job shortening them.

Thanks again!

Bob,

As you can see, Earl has it covered. But if you would still like to send your scans, I can PM you an email address.
