Cox Engines
Cox Engines.
Yes, Virginia there is a forum! I just joined it today. Cox was bought out by Estes over twenty five years ago(i,e, 1994) I have owned almost all of the flying model aircraft. While searching Fee-Bay, I came across a MINT condition RARE NOS Testor 049 BD-5 James Bond Gas Powered Airplane. Mint condition!!!! Even the box is mint! This plane came out approximately 1975. I had one back then. I could not get it to fly. Under powered and over weight! For once I agree with the ridiculous over pricing this person is asking. I think he might be under pricing this item. I would love to own this model if only to clone it. Good luck to both the seller and the buyer! It's an awesome find. https://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-NOS-T...AAOSw9MZfw8e I

Testors engines (McCoy) were low-performing TOTAL TURDS compared to Cox engines.
McCoy engines actually made the JUNK motors produced by Fox seem decent.

This is another place where I agree, at least in principle, with GH.
This Testors BD-5 has nothing to do with Cox engines other than its engine sharing the same displacement as a common Cox engine. This is a competing product. I will say that I had one or two Testors .049s that were reliable runners and I did like their spring starter arrangement.

I believe the same plane with a jet engine was the Coors Silver Bullet jet that I used to see at air shows.

BD-5 was a pusher prop piston engine airplane.
BD-5J was powered by a turbine jet engine. BD-5J was the Coors Light Silver Bullet and was also in one of the James Bond pics with Roger Moore.

Apparently the Testors version had flight characteristics very similar to the real Bede BD-5. Underpowering and lack of appropriate engines was a real problem for the kit aircraft. Wikipedia has a nice article about the company and aircraft at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bede_BD-5
Of note, the first 4 BD-5s completed resulted in 4 crashes and 3 fatalities. "Of the first 25 aircraft completed, with both the "A" and "B" wings, 14 crashed with 9 fatalities." |

The Jet-powered BD-5J was and is the only viable flier.

Yeah, and the little guy had quick landing gear to go with pretty decent performance. It was a prominent part of the air show routine to pop them out and back in over and over. Seems like they said the little jet engine weighed about 75 lbs. That's 15 lbs less than my dog.
