Here's an oldie but a goodie... The Saturn Development Plan from December of 1959. The study is basically a summary of the findings of a panel of folks from NASA, the Air Force, ABMA, ARPA, etc. who had a hand in deciding what Saturn I should look like. Reasons are given why some of the original configuration possibilities, such as basically using a Titan missile (Titan I) for upper stages was rejected, as well as the possibility of developing a 15 foot diameter version of Titan to use for upper stages. Also we see the genesis of the "progressive capabilities" idea, to develop stages that would be usable in subsequent variants as new stages are developed to increase the capabilities of the Saturn rocket. The use of the Centaur, then under development, was also mentioned, as well as the use of the Centaur engines (RL-10) being used for the S-IV upper stage, although the original plan as outlined here was to use only four of them, instead of the six ultimately used on the S-IV stage. The requirements for what would eventually become the J-2 engine is also outlined here, as well as the first iteration of the S-II stage, which was to be a 260 inch (S-IVB diameter) stage powered by four J-2 class engines... this stage would later be increased to 33 feet in diameter and have five J-2 engines on it for use on Saturn V. The S-III stage was also mentioned, but this stage was canceled before it started development. No mention was made of the S-IVB stage, at this early phase... but some discussion was made of the S-V stage (Centaur).
