Great minds think alike I'll give you first dibs on it.

Other folks used tubular nylon, and also some smaller straps and still occasionally got zippers with less than optimal ejection delays.
What I see with the nylon is guys running it all the way down to the motor mount. It'll get lots of heat exposure there and end up not lasting very long. Heck, even the kevlar down there will eventually wear out.

I was looking for something cheap with a wide profile to do the same job as your ribbon, prevent zippers in less than optimal conditions. Replacement seatbelt rolls of about 25 ft. were available cheap at the time.
When I say ribbon, I mean it generically - ie, flat, woven, material. This could even include elastic, but I avoid that out of fear of crack back, although I still have it in a few birds.

I was using polyester ribbon, but it doesn't hold up well. So I usually use the cheap 1" wide nylon ribbon from the hardware store. This is good for tubes down to 1.6" or 1.3". For smaller MRs, I grab all the narrower nylon ribbon I can find. The stuff on camera straps is almost perfect. I even tried shoe strings for this, but they...sucked!

I have some nomex fabric I may try to cut into ribbon, but I need to get a new sewing maching first. (Gak, I never thought I'd hear myself saying that!)

The only issue I run into with some stuff, like the seatbelt ribbon and the narrower flat nylon sold for HPR, is the tightness of the weave. Trying to sew loops into that stuff requires pliers to push the needle thru.

Doug, are you going kevlar-nylon-kevlar on LPR too, or just MPR and HPR birds?
Yes, on LPR, too, although it can be a tight fit for 1" and under tubes. I sew the folds (loops) in the ends to receive the kevlar string. Tying the ribbon would take up way too much space.

...

I desperately need to update my webpages. I've added lots of stuff but never updated the home/index pages to add pointers to the new stuff Anyway, I was looking for a pic and found this page I did on this very topic.

I took mine to an upholstery shop. After I told them what the big ones were for, they sewed everything for free on their super duper heavy sewing machine and wouldn't take a nickel for it! Sometimes it's nice living in rural America.
