CP & CG
Okay after checking the CP and CG with the D12-3 far enough back not to burn the engine bells, puts the CG on the wrong side of the CP. Already overweight, don't want to add weight to the nose if possible. With the E12-4 will be even worse.
Looks like without the engine bells for flight. Mike |

I predict adding nose weight.

Okay Message Received

Starting to make sense. Longer arm less weight needed. Just cranked up my design computer. Already increased the size of the fins. Peter Alway's book is coming in handy for this project. Little Joe II looks like it has the numbers I'm needing to draw the tower. Mike Last edited by mbauer : 03-12-2022 at 11:31 AM. Reason: computer |

Life/$$
Life sometimes displaces hobbies.
Been hired to draw a home for a friend. Been busy last two weekends and now this one as well. I'll get back on this project once the home is done. Didn't want everyone thinking I gave up. I do have a tower designed and printed. It is very small it won't add much weight. Just more drag. Boost Protective Cover now part of rocket. Best regards, Mike Bauer |

Any thought of making one in 1/70 scale for those who cannot get the Apogee kit?
Then a 1B in the same scale for those who cannot get the Estes/SEMROC one? Bill

Updates
Busy summer. Got some flying done for photos of the local mountains. Mechanic work and rain most of the summer.
Winter is here, 18" of snow last Wed the 26. Temps not getting above 30deg F. Forecast is for some warmer and colder days ahead. Darkness for sure, as the daylit days are getting shorter and shorter. Update on the Saturn V. Tried to use larger Fins by adding some clear plastic overhead projector film. Had to laminate several layers to get it strong enough. The added weight made this a very bad option. Decide to print over size fins for the stability. These have been printed and soon will be added to the project to get it completed. Another model that modified for Rocket use is my SR71 HABU version of the Lockheed Blackbird. Printed and will be working on it the same time as finishing the Saturn V. It is not to scale, but at 4ft should makes a very impressive looking model. Current weight of completed and flight ready 4ft long is 9.8oz. Modification added weight, balsa wood spars, larger internal tube for the rocket motor. Added wing ribs, increased wingtip strength. Photos show the overhead projector clear plastic print, second shows the laminated part getting bent. Final photos show the fin and plastic gluing process to final part ready for install. Super glue had to be used to glue the plastic to the photo paper covered fin. Mike Last edited by mbauer : 10-30-2022 at 01:16 PM. Reason: typo added Photos of SR 71 HABU and Friends |

1/70 Scale
Quote:
Hi Bill, Yes, the 1/70 size could be an option. Easy to re-scale once I have a working flight proven, finished design. I prefer to build bigger models as my hands are not as dexterous as decades ago. The 1B is a really heavy rocket the way it is currently designed. 1/70 will probably need an "E" size to get airborne. After my SR71 build is complete, plan to work on the Saturn 1B next. Bought some really light weight cardstock to use for the rockets. Brighter White means the ink looks better. At 26"x40" allows bigger models to be printed. Have to cut their width to 24" to fit my printer. Then my HP T120 Designjet Plotter can use the extra 4" length from a standard 24x36 sheet. UPDATE TO BILLS QUESTION: Yes, when I print final design size will be 1/70 for them. Currently at 1/65 and the 1/70 will fit on the sheets better. Mike Last edited by mbauer : 10-31-2022 at 11:37 PM. EPS Construction Foam
Purchased 15-sheets of 10" x 10" x 0.5" EPS Foam Board.
Been using 3/16" thick foam board that has a paper top and bottom. The foam board you buy at the local Walmart. The bottom bulkhead/former weighs in at 0.4oz using the 3/16" heavy weight stuff. The EPS foam 0.1oz offers improved 1/2" thickness to help hold the shape, it is 0.3oz lighter. Removing three heavy weight formers (1.2oz) and replacing with the EPS foam (0.3oz) will save 0.9oz of weight down low' helping with the balance issue. Mike |
