Helium is getting super expensive.

Would the balloon burst the paper once it is filling? Expanding on the inside could burst/tear the cardstock.

How to fit the balloon inside if full already?

The internal tube for exhaust gases will be deformed.

Would allow a smaller parachute to be used, if the idea can be worked out.

I like the idea, although installing might be the issue, maybe some of those really long skinny balloons might work. Have helium and a balloon fill at work....

On this smaller 1/65 Scale, don't think the weight limit is going to be an issue.

Lost over 12.6gms of weight by changing some parts.

Then lost 0.9oz by changing to the foam. Future models will have 1/4" foam used for the current 3/16" heavy paper covered foam bulkheads.

One of the projects listed below now has the highest priority once the items get here. Tomorrow I weld up a portable table for Hot Knifing home insulation foam into different thicknesses. 1/4" possible, 1/2" standard. Table can handle 2.5" thick x 4ft x 8ft foam and still work to get thin slices from it.

Metal for table has been purchased, will be delivered tomorrow, so welding/fabricating this week as the hot knife Bow will be here on Weds.

Final build today should give the weight of the completed rocket. Testing will verify if need weight or the larger fins will work for stability.

I buried the engine as far inside the bottom as possible and still get access to it.

Couple of build issues, changed some parts for lighter and easier construction.

Today need to install 2-of the bottom shrouds/cones the fins fit in, add the fins, glue the Apollo, CSM, LM Cover and LES together. Slide onto the 3rd stage top and spin test for stability.

Hope all goes well today, it would be great to get this done, then I can begin on the SR71 Habu and Saturn 1B. Like to work on two builds at a time, if an issue develops, gives time to think about it while you work on something else.


Still trying to decide on the final scale. I can do any scale, but thinking if there is a popular size most like, can do them that size.

Super small will be the stomp rockets currently flying.

Eventually all scales will be available, once I retire from work. Just don't have the time right now to do a bunch of different scales, other projects are demanding time on them too.

Like big rockets, so trying to stay away from the A, B powered size.

Well under 10-oz max design proposal. Used an E-size engine mount, first flights will be a D12-3.

UPDATE: 7NOV22; Rocket has lost weight while the glue dries, 7.5oz today. With a D12-3 it weighs 9.1oz

Purchased some parachutes from eBay last night. Forgot to order them with my last order for stuff. Bought a few 30" and 32" sizes, already have 24", which doesn't look to be big enough for this rocket. On-line calculators say everything from 27" through 36".

Internet was out since the 13th, came back on today the 28th.

The 1/65 scale Saturn V is ready to fly. Weighs in with a D12-3 at 10.5 oz.

Other projects been working on and almost complete:
1/8 and 1/6 scale Mercury Redstone.

The 1/8 is complete except for final construction steps

Waiting on the right time to finish the 1/6 scale. It is over 14ft tall with the Escape system installed. The Mercury Spacecraft and Escape system are 52" tall. Photo below.

Designed, printed a pattern for an octagon parachute 47" diameter for the 1/6 scale, Biggest I can print with my printer.

Plastic for parachute is in the birthday party section table cloths at Walmart. Bought a 54"x84" Fancy metallic one for $4.79 while the cheaper lighter weight plastic ones sell for $1.29. Bought several with different party patterns.

The 47" diameter weighs in at a hefty 1.1oz for the canopy part.

GH will be Happy to know I've taken the cluster idea and mark all my bulkheads with up to 7.

Stilll having issues with current provider. Almost a month, on the 13th, when it first went out.

Supposed to get a FedEx Home delivery today, but probably on Monday is when it will arrrive.

Package? New Starlink System.

Been designing/drawing and building. Current project to complete this weekend is the 1/6 scale Redstone.

Printed and need to finish cutting and then build 1/48 scale Saturn V.

Printed and needing cut out / built for test part fit is a new drawing of the Saturn 1b in 1/32 scale. Final models of this one will be 1/32, 1/48, 1/72 scale.

Made a launch pad using mild steel. Weighs in at 22.5lbs and can tilt up to 20 degree for winds.

Been cutting my own foam, found that the pink home insulation foam can come in 25PSI and 15PSI sheets. Bought a full size sheet of the 25psi and cutting thin for fins, worked well for the Redstones.

Designed / built a table using a 4ft wide hot knife Bow to cut the foam full size sheets.

Still having internet issues. Just bought a Starlink System. Should prove more reliable than the old.

Parts have been weighed it comes in at 39oz with 3 D12-3. More likely going to need 3 of the E12-4

Or 4 of the D12-3.

Completed the 1/8 scale version weighs in at 24.3 oz flight ready with two D12-3. 36" diameter parachute.

Made a launch pad out of steel that weighs 22.5 lbs so these larger rockets can handle a little wind without tipping over. Launch rod is center of rocket and is a 3/4" conduit. Turnbuckle can be used to adjust up to 20 degree if winds become an issue.

Feet of Pad are 2" angle Iron 3/16" thick. Pad itself is 1/4" plate.

Launch rod mounts in floor stands, can use up to 10ft long 3/4" or 1/2" metal conduit for the rods.

Pad turnbuckle will give 20 degree of angle if needed. Measured with a gauge we have at work.

Work scale designed for weighing welding rod, so easy to weigh this without worry for the digital scale. Weighs 22.5lbs.

There is a downstairs Arctic Entry that can handle up to 16ft. Will clean up from all the plant debris and see if it will work for a rocket garden.
